Boosted
by their FA Trophy replay success at Clevedon Town in
midweek, Rugby United went into this game looking to
record their first Premier Division win since 11 September.
But,
after bouncing back from an early setback, a late goal
from Bedford’s Chris Dillon eventually sealed their
fate in a 3-1 defeat.
Valley
boss Tony Dobson said: “We had a good spell after getting
back to 1-1, then gave them a second goal far too easily
just before half time.
“Even
so, at only 2-1 down, you think you can still go on
to get something from the game. But we missed out on
a couple of good chances, before a simple crossfield
ball caught us out.”
The
Eagles grabbed a third-minute lead, Paul Fewings beating
unsighted United goalkeeper Mike Payne with a low shot
following a cross from Parys Okai that was half cleared.
Valley
equalised eight minutes later, Craig Dutton ghosting
into the box before firing into the top corner.
After
Payne stood up well to parry from Dillon, United dominated
for the next 20 minutes without reward.
And,
on 37 minutes a catalogue of poor defending allowed
Craig Rydeheard to cross and Richard Challinor to prod
home Bedford’s second.
Early
in the second half the ball dropped to Robbie Beard
in space, but Rugby’s top scorer shot weakly at goalkeeper
James Robinson. The back pedalling keeper then caught
Dave Pearson’s attempted lob.
Payne,
struggling with a thigh injury sustained in a first
half collision, made a fine double save, before a diagonal
ball played over the United defence in the 78th minute
found the unmarked Dillon who netted with a clinical
finish.
