Two
mistakes by Rugby United eventually cost them dear as
they ended a frustrating afternoon with nothing after
dominating for long periods.
The visitors clung on to the points thanks mainly to
an excellent second half performance from goalkeeper
Mark Hervin. Valley played probably some of their best
football of the season after the break as they tried
in vain to haul back a 2-1 deficit.
Ian King went close in the 58th minute with a volley
that was pushed away by Hervin at full stretch. The
keeper then stood up well at his near post to save from
Justin Marsden with his legs. In the 70th minute Hervin
rescued his side again by denying Robbie Beard.
The Rugby striker had a follow up effort well blocked
by defender Rene Regis. At the end of a darting run
Beard cut the ball back from the by line looking for
Marsden, but defender Gary Thorne made a vital interception.
In a rare foray downfield Chippenham's David Gilroy
- on loan from Weston-super-Mare - dragged a good opportunity
wide, before Marsden's effort curled just the wrong
of the side of the upright, much to the relief of Hervin
who was rooted to the spot in the middle of his goal.
In the last minute of normal time King's free kick failed
to clear the Chippenham wall.
But, deep into added time King rolled another free kick
into the path of Jamie Williams making a run down the
left hand side of the penalty area. United's luck was
out as Williams' driven cross deflected up off a defender
and hit the crossbar.
During the opening 45 minutes, after Williams had seen
Hervin athletically tip his shot over the bar, Chippenham
took the lead in the 26th minute, Sam Allison
scoring after United keeper Mike Payne scuffed his clearance
from a backpass by Andy Rutherford.
In the 32nd minute Rugby got back on level terms, Justin
Marsden turning Wayne Thorne inside out before
finding the far corner of the net with a low angled
drive.
Another mistake set up the visitors for a second two
minutes later when substitute Gary Redgate allowed Allison
to escape down the right. With United short handed at
the back, Allison delivered to David Gilroy
unmarked at the far post who converted the easiest of
chances.
The home side came straight back through King who was
unlucky with a shot on target that was kept out by unfortunate
teammate Gary Moran. Marsden flashed a shot across the
face of the Chippenham goal, and on the stoke of half
time a free kick awarded just outside the box was wasted
by Williams. |
