For the second time
in a month United returned from their travels on the
wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline, and will count themselves
unlucky not to have snatched at least a point from the
game at the Walks Stadium on Tuesday night.
With a squad depleted by
injury and work commitments, United put in a battling
performance, but were never able to fully recover from
going 3-0 down within the first half an hour of the
match.
Manager Tony Dobson gave
18 year old goalkeeper Dave Hazel his first team debut,
with the only other change from Saturday's starting
line-up seeing Steve Evans coming in for Adam Hart.
Hazel was busy right from
the start, making a fine stop from Dave Staff in the
opening exchanges, and on 15 minutes he managed to get
a hand to Danny Bloomfield's well struck right foot
effort, but was unable to prevent it crossing the line.
Kings Lynn extended their
lead on 28 minutes, when Jack Defty finished off a fine
move, and just three minutes later it was Defty again
on the score sheet with the best goal of the night -
a powerful, rising strike from 20 yards that gave Hazel
no chance.
At the other end of the
pitch, Justin Marsden continued his recent run of good
form and was proving a handful for the Kings Lynn back-line,
and with the half time whistle approaching Robbie Beard
managed to get on the end of a clever Marsden cross
to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
Both sides started the
second half in an attacking vein, with Hazel saving
well from Bloomfield on 48 minutes, and Andy Commander
clearing the resulting corner off the line, a contribution
which was typical of the defender's outstanding performance
on the night.
Marsden was denied by Steve
Wilson's athletic save on 60 minutes, and further United
pressure saw Beard drag his shot wide of the post shortly
after. Marsden finally got some reward for his
effort on the night on 68 minutes, with a long range
shot which powered past Wilson.
Kings Lynn extended their
lead once more on 75 minutes when a header from Danny
Hammond from a Defty cross made the score 4-2.
However another well struck goal from the edge of the
box from Marsden three minutes later set the game up
for a tight finish.
Despite pressure towards
the end, Rugby were unable to find an equaliser.
Their closest effort resulting from a goalmouth scramble
which saw a Craig Dutton shot well-saved by Wilson.
The defeat sees United
remain in 10th place in the SLPD, with the next league
fixture being a trip to Dunstable on December 4th.
