Beard
Breaks Record In Style |
Robbie
Beard's typically strong run
and clinical finish in Rugby's
2-1 win over Chesham United
took the striker to league goalscoring
record status at Rugby United.
Beard's
67 goals in just 141 starts
since joining Rugby in 2000
has smashed previous record
holder Danny Conway's 66 goals
in over 230 appearances.
Robbie,
a summer signing from Bedworth
before the 2000/1 season, made
an immediate impact, grabbing
15 goals in his first season
and winning a Player of the
Season award.
His
pace, finishing ability, and
most of all commitment have
proved to be invaluable for
Valley as the striker enters
his fifth season for the club.
An
injury-stricken 2001/2 season
restricted Robbie to just ten
goals in his second season,
but the 2002/3 season provided
him with many a game to remember.
In
a game against his former club
Bedworth, where Robbie started
his career after progressing
through their youth set-up,
Beard struck his first hat-trick
for Rugby and it could not have
been any sweeter. Another
hat-trick against Cinderford
Town followed and he clocked
up an impressive 21 goals.
Last
season was another crowning
achievement for Robbie, as he
reached the 50 league goal mark,
scoring 18 goals, taking the
captain's band for the first
time and guiding Rugby to fifth
place in the league - their
best finish for over 10 years.
Beard
now looks set to confirm his
place at the top of the books,
as he looks as good and dedicated
as ever, and was perfectly demonstrated
against Chesham as he sprinted
30 yards to charge down the
goalkeeper and then after making
the tackle, ran a further 20
yards to win the ball off the
covering defender.
After
playing a lot of "unknown
teams" already this season,
Robbie has not failed to be
noticed for either his unbelievable
work-rate, goal-scoring ability
or ability to wind up absolutely
anyone.
And
now we wait for that 100-goal
marker! |
