Delroy Gordon's powerful header is disallowed
Two
instances of poor defending and the failure to take
opportunities saw Rugby slip to their fourth consecutive
league defeat to Bath City at Butlin Road.
Things
had started very well, with Rugby playing slick passing
with five new signings from the 1-5 defeat to Cheshunt
two weeks before. Karl Lewis was in between the
sticks for Valley, while Steve Farmer and Tommy Hannigan
made defensive debuts and Scott Goodwin and Avun Jephcott
both lined up in midfield.
Rugby
were rewarded just three minutes into the game when
good play down the right hand side involving David Stone
and Jephcott saw the ball fall to Kevin Slinn, who could
not connect properly, but the ball bounced out to Rob
Maddox who turned and shot low into the net from
six yards.
Rugby
continued to press on Bath, but on their first venture
forward they equalised. A Bath midfielder broke
from the Rugby midfield with consummate ease before
stumbling towards goal only to fall over the ball which
fell nicely for Tony Bird to smash in an unstoppable
drive from twenty yards.
The
first half was then a little dour, the only highlight
being a disallowed goal for Rugby. Scott Goodwin's
in-swinging corner caught out Mark Bryant in the Bath
goal and he was crowded out by three Rugby players while
Delroy Gordon rose to powerfully head into the net,
only for the referee to blow up for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Rugby
came out for the second half and were again slightly
on top - the best chance of the half falling to goalscorer
Maddox at the far post, but he couldn't direct his shot
goalwards at the far post.
Bath
scored a cruel winner with 25 minutes remaining as they
ventured forwards for the first time in the half.
They cut down the right hand side with ease and squared
the ball to an unmarked Holloway who tapped in
from inside the six yard box.
Valley
failed to recover from this shock and never looked like
getting the elusive equaliser.
