David Stone is blocked by Martin Peat
Rugby
Town suffered their worst home defeat since November
2003 as they went down 5-1 to Cheshunt making it ten
goals conceded in the last two league games.
Cheshunt
had made a similar start to the season to Rugby, but
from the game you never would have guessed it as the
visitors were first to every ball and were dangerous
with each quick attack they mounted.
It
looked as though it might be a different story during
the opening exchanges as David Stone forced an early
corner after his shot was blocked. From the ensuing
flag-kick, Cheshunt goalkeeper Peat misjudged his punch
which fell straight to Delroy Gordon six yards
out, and the defender tapped home his first goal for
the club.
However,
the visitors were immediately on the attack trying to
get back into the game, and did so on thirteen minutes
with Gregory Gregoriou finishing well inside
the area past debutant Ryan Poole.
Stone
should have got Rugby back in front when he dissected
the Cheshunt defence but Peat made up for his earlier
mistake with a fine save.
Cheshunt
scored a well-deserved goal seven minutes before half
time as Poole and Gould had a mix up in communication
culminating in the latter heading over the goalkeeper's
head leaving Dwayne Clarke with an empty net
to head into.
More
shambolic defending followed and it was Gould unable
to keep an eye on Lloyd Opara and the striker
scuffed a shot into the net to extend the visitor's
first half lead.
Although
Rugby came out for the second half with what looked
like an improved attitude, it didn't last long and things
only got worse.
Cheshunt
had a host of chances and the two they scored came in
the final 15 minutes, with Bernard heading in
a neat goal and Opara bagging a second from close
range as Valley were easily cut open.
Rugby
still had chances to get back into the game. At
3-2, Simeon Williams worked well down the right and
cut the ball back to Kevin Slinn, but the striker completely
miscued the ball from six yards and didn't register
a shot on goal.
