High-flying
King’s Lynn produced a scintillating second half display
to condemn Rugby Town to a third consecutive defeat
at Butlin Road.
Billy
Jeffrey was forced to make one change from the team
that lost at Yate Town the previous week, with Ryan
Byrne replacing the injured Matt Green in midfield to
make his first league start of the season.
The
Linnets did the damage during a twelve-minute spell
after the break, as Valley struggled to contain Lynn.
The
first half was a scrappy affair with neither side creating
a great deal of opportunities.
The visitor’s first chance of the first half
came when Rugby goalkeeper Farhad Afandiyev raced out
of his area chasing a through ball, but Matt Nolan beat
him to the ball, leaving the goalkeeper stranded outside
of his area, but when the ball fell to full-back Dean
West just outside the area, he could not capitalise
as Craig Herbert got a foot in the way to prevent a
certain goal.
Nolan
again had a run on the Rugby defence down the right
hand side and his rasping volley was matched by an acrobatic
save from Afandiyev.
Rugby’s
best chance of the match came as a long, lofted through-ball
from midfield was chased by leading scorer David Stone,
but despite outpacing the Lynn defence, the young striker
could not finish past goalkeeper Aaron Benstead, who
recovered well from slipping.
Valley
failed to keep up the tempo in limiting their opponents
in the second half and Lynn started to make more and
more chances.
Nolan
thought he has given the visitor’s the lead as he ran
through on goal, but Afandiyev brilliantly saved his
side-footed effort low to his left.
At
the other end, Rugby had a golden chance to take the
lead as Delroy Gordon met Tim Wooding’s whipped corner
but Benstead make a smart save to his left.
But
Rugby could not hold out much longer as Valley were
punished from a corner as they failed to clear their
lines and Dean West tucked the ball home from inside
the six yard box.
Soon
after, they doubled their lead from another corner as
Sam McMahon fired in from the edge of the area via both
posts.
The
game was effectively ended minutes later as Jack Defty
capitalised on Wooding’s error and scooped the ball
superbly into the net, much to the delight of the traveling
fans.
