Billy Jeffrey felt his side had deserved more from Saturday's
visit to the West Country, after Yate's Lee Jefferies'
late goal had inflicted back-to-back league defeats
on Rugby for the
first time since the beginning of last October.
The
defeat saw the Valley
slip further down the SLPD table to 13th place, and
a disappointed Jeffrey reflected on the game. He
said : "We're disappointed with the result, but
after last week's poor showing at home to Cirencester
I am reasonably pleased with the performance. Once
we had weathered the storm out there in the first twenty
minutes or so, I thought we had played quite well and
were in with a chance of nicking it ourselves in the
second half."
Hesitant
goalkeeping from Farhad Afandiyev allowed the home
side's skipper Jefferies to nip in behind the
Rugby defence and head home from Dave Elsey's
free kick for the vital goal in the 81st minute, after
a second half which had seen the Valley edge the clear
cut chances tally.
On
the hour mark, Chris Tullin had found himself one-on-one
with keeper
Tony Court , but the Yate
keeper was equal to his effort, as he threw himself
at Tullin's powerful shot, turning it away for
a corner. Shortly afterwards, Court again had
to be in alert form when Robbie Beard had released
his strike partner Kevin Slinn for another run on goal,
narrowing Slinn's options and in turn forcing him to
slide the ball past the base of the left hand post.
The
game's first half had been poor and seen little in terms
of goalmouth action, though Steve Evans had had a close
range effort blocked on the line after the ball had
fallen to him after a scramble in the box, and at the
other end, Tim Wooding made a similar goal-line clearance
from Darren Edwards.
Mike Wyatt also struck the post for the home
side with a header from a well-delivered corner..
