Valley
gained a point from a closely-contested Southern League
Premier Division game against Yate Town, which could
have swung either way.
New
signing Jamie Kearns was not fit to start but was included
on the bench along with returnee Nathan Thompson. Rugby
boss Billy Jeffrey was without the services of influential
midfielder Willis Francis, so Danny Williams came into
the side on the left and Steve Evans reverted to central
midfielder while Craig Herbert returned to the defence.
The
visitors, who were on a run of three consecutive wins
coming into the game, started brightly and could have
led early on had it not been for some sharp reactions
from Player of the Month Farhad Afandiyev.
Yate
looked certain to take the lead when Afandiyev saved
only for the ball to loop high in the air in the six
yard box, but Darren Edwards could not keep his header
down and hit the crossbar instead. Rugby broke
quickly down the left with David Stone who beat two
men before delivering a superb cross to the far post,
but Robbie Beard could only head against the woodwork
as well.
Yate
kept the initiative in the first half and had more chances
to open the scoring but again Afandiyev was equal to
it while at the other end Danny Williams almost poked
Rugby ahead but it was cleared off the line.
In
the second half, Rugby came out stronger and were forced
into a change with Kearns replacing the injured Herbert.
Stone
had a key chance as he headed straight at the goalkeeper
from Tim Wooding's cross while Beard was unlucky after
cutting in from the left to see a shot just miss the
far post.
At
the other end, Wooding made a fantastic challenge to
stop a certain goal as Edwards homed in on goal.
