Rugby
Town were stunned by BGB South & West basement
side Hanwell Town in the FA Trophy 1st Qualifying
Round, crashing out of the competition at the first
hurdle. Hanwell,
whose only other victory had come in the opening
game of the season back in August, were well worthy
of their place in the next round as Rugby put
in an inept and disappointing display - and despite
this still managed to create and spurn a hatful
of opportunities.
Rugby
went behind when Tom Breward was controversially
penalised for a clumsy trip in the area and the
home side slotted home.
Valley
were given another sucker punch in the second
half as a spectacular effort from 20 yards evaded
goalkeeper Farhad Afandiyev.
Town
were given a lifeline back into the game when
Matt Gearing was brought down in the area and
Jason Taylor
converted his 10th goal of the season. But Rugby
failed to make any sustained pressure on the Hanwell
goal and slumped out of the Trophy at the first
hurdle.
