| Danny Hall nets the equaliser
Rugby
bounced back from their weekend defeat with a
victory at the Rockingham Triangle on Bank Holiday
Monday - thanks to second half goals from midfield
duo Danny Hall and Tom Breward.
With
Billy Jeffrey back in charge of side which was
unchanged for the third successive match, the
Valley were good value for their win. With the
exception of a poor fifteen minute spell leading
up to half-time, they looked comfortable throughout
against a Corby side containing four ex-Rugby
players Scott Goodwin, Robbie Maddox, Chris Goodman
and Danny Marlow.
Corby
had taken the lead in that quarter of an hour
before the break, when Steve Towers and Jamie
Clarke were given far too much time and space
in their build-up play, and the ball made its
way through to Kevin Byrne in the box, who poked
it home from close range.
Before
the goal, Rugby had looked in control with David
Stone flashing his shot just wide of the post
and Danny Hall seeing his low effort saved by
Darren Watts in the Steelmen's goal.
Farhad
Afandiyev then showed he was not suffering any
prolonged damage from the embarrassment of conceding
against his opposite number in the Mangotsfield
game two days earlier, when he pulled off two
fine saves at full stretch before the interval.
Jeffrey's
half-time team talk and adjustment to a 3-5-2
formation saw Rugby emerge for the second period
with renewed confidence and an evident desire
to drag themselves back into the game.
This
lively attitude generated its own rewards on 51
minutes when after neat interchange play down
the right between Aaron Stringfellow and Jason
Taylor, Stringfellow's near post cross was met
by Danny Hall
who guided it past Watts for the Valley's equaliser.
Rugby
continued to push forward in search of a second
goal, and it came on 68 minutes when another near
post delivery - this time a corner from Hall -
found the head of Tom
Breward and the 18 year old, who
had impressed throughout, applied the necessary
power and direction to register his first goal
for the club.
As
the game progressed, the home side tried to increase
the pressure, and although chances fell to Brett
Darby and Dom Hallows, Afandiyev and his defence
stood firm.
In
fact the best chance of the end part of the game
fell to the Valley, when a pacy break from Stone
after a Corby corner saw him get beyond the Corby
back-line, and his pass left Matt Gearing with
a one-on-one with Watts. Unfortunately the ex-Northampton
Town youngster hesitated too long and then screwed
his shot wide of the post.
