The Valley's disappointing run of results
continued on Saturday when they stumbled to a third
consecutive away league defeat against Team Bath
at Twerton Park.
Having fallen behind to a harsh penalty on 10 minutes,
they conceded again shortly after half-time, and
although Matt Gearing did pull a goal back with
a quarter of an hour remaining - it proved only
to be a consolation strike for Billy Jeffrey's young
side.
The home team had looked the most likely to open
the scoring, and after Craig Herbert was adjudged
to have fouled Steve Abbot in the box, Neil Saunders
duly obliged from the resulting spot-kick.
Rugby keeper Farhad Afandiyev then saved well from
the Students' striker Matt Williams, and shortly
after Matt Townley also screwed the ball wide from
a dangerous position.
The visitors finally started to make an impact late
on in the first half, and David Stone was unlucky
to see his shot blocked for a corner after his pacy
run had beaten a number of Team Bath defenders.
Hesitant defending not long after the restart presented
the hosts with a golden opportunity to extend their
lead, and Steve Abbot took advantage by curling
his shot from 10 yards into the top corner.
The gap was reduced when Matt
Gearing's well-struck volley hit
the roof of the net, despite a valiant attempt at
touching it over from the fingertips of Bath keeper
Darren Cuitty.
Chances for a Rugby equaliser came and went, with
two of the best falling to Town top scorer Jason
Taylor. He first saw his angled shot parried to
safety by Cuitty, and then from the resulting corner
he lifted the ball over from close range.
