Youth
team striker David Kolodynski came off the
bench to complete the scoring in spectacular
fashion |
For
once it was the Valley who gave their opponents
a lesson in finishing, as the Tiverton's players'
confidence in front of goal failed to match that
of their manager in his comments ahead of last
Saturday's home victory for Rugby.
Experienced
Tivvy boss Martyn Rogers had been quoted as saying
in the pre-match build up that his side needed
to beat "teams like Rugby", and he had
plenty of time to chew on his mis-guided words
on the long trip back to Devon.

Midfielder
Matt Gearing opened the scoring for Rugby
with a rasping drive which went in via the
crossbar |
To
be fair to Rogers though, Tiverton started strongly
and could have taken the lead on a number of occasions
before Matt Gearing scored against the run of
play with another superbly struck goal in the
19th minute.
Tiverton
equalised almost immediately from the penalty
spot, but second half goals from Jason Taylor,
Danny Hall and a fine individual effort from substitute
David Kolodynski wrapped the game up and sent
Town back into the top half of the table.
More
abject finishing from the Tivvy front-line and
an inspired performance from Rugby's Farhad Afandiyev,
who was also aided on two occasions by his left
hand-post, ensured that the visitors failed to
add to their tally.
Tiverton
settled first in the blustery conditions, and
a string of chances in the first quarter of an
hour included a Paul Wyatt header which somehow
stayed out and two excellent pieces of goalkeeping
by Afandiyev from Carl Cliff Brown - firstly just
tipping his header over the bar and secondly smothering
the ball at his feet when he was clean through
on goal after a mistake by Chris Tullin.
New
boy David Blenkinsopp's persistence on 16 minutes
created Rugby's first shot of the game, but strike
partner Taylor's effort on the turn was caught
by Kevin Readings.
Shortly
after Matt Gearing
fired his volley home from the edge of the penalty
area to give his side the lead, but their joy
was short-lived when Craig Herbert was adjudged
to have fouled Nathan Pepperell in the box, and
the Valley conceded their third penalty in less
than a month.
Pepperell's
spot-kick was an exemplary one, and despite a
couple of on-target efforts from David Stone and
Taylor for the home side and dangerous free-kick
for the visitors from Chris Vinnicombe which Afandiyev
cleared at the second attempt, both sides retired
to the dressing rooms all-square.
Just
three minutes into the second half, the Valley
went ahead again when Readings could only parry
Jamie Williams's shot and Jason
Taylor picked up the pieces and
fired home from close range.
Rugby
appeared to sit back on their lead a little, and
in doing so invited their opponents at them. Chris
Holloway spooned a half chance over the bar and
Cliff-Brown's powerful effort went just wide.
Cliff-Brown then struck the woodwork and Jamie
Mudge did likewise from an acute angle.
The
introduction of Kolodynski for a tiring Blenkinsopp
recharged the efforts of the home side though,
and on 72 minutes Danny
Hall curled his corner straight
into the back of the net - with keeper Readings
and the defence both assuming the other would
deal with the threat.
Shortly
after Afandiyev pulled another fine stop - this
time from Holloway - and Taylor almost grabbed
another with a header from a Gearing corner.
David
Kolodynski ended any doubts that
the three points were Rugby's, when on 79 minutes
he shrugged off one player to break through the
middle of the Tiverton back-line, before twisting
and turning a second defender into knots and then
impressively curling the ball into the net for
his third goal in three games.
