The Valley returned to winning ways with
a deserved two goal victory over relegation-threatened
Wealdstone at Butlin Road on Tuesday night.
Goals
from Delroy Gordon and David Kolodynski on his
full league debut ended a run of three straight
defeats for Billy Jeffrey's side, and the margin
of victory could easily have been much greater.

Youth
team product David Kolodynski was on target
with a crucial goal in his first league start |
New
signing Jamie Williams
lined-up on the left of midfield with Aaron
Stringfellow reverting to a full-back
position, and David
Kolodynski replaced the suspended
Jason Taylor, and in tandem with partner David
Stone, the pace of Town's strike pairing caused
problems for the Wealdstone defence from the off.
After
just 3 minutes, Stone seized on a poor header
from six foot seven inch defender Ben Martin,
and brought an excellent low save from keeper
Lee Carroll from close range. Kolodynski was the
next to burst through the heart of the visitors'
defence, but his shot lacked conviction and was
turned away for a corner.
The
resulting Williams's swinging delivery was met
by Delroy Gordon,
and his header was well-directed into the back
of the net to give Rugby the lead.
Rugby
continued to pile on the pressure, with Stone
putting in a fine run down the left and then seeing
his dangerous cross only just cut out, and Hall's
overhead lob again releasing Kolodynski down the
middle, but for once Martin this time dealt with
the threat.
On
27 minutes, another corner, this time from Gearing,
almost provided Gordon with his second, but his
header bounced agonisingly across the face of
the goal - with both Chris Tullin and Kolodynski
unable to apply the finishing touch.
At
the other end Wealdstone found the Town defence
in good form, and rarely troubled Farhad Afandiyev
in the Rugby goal. Josias Carbon had their only
real opportunity of the half, but he sent his
shot from an acute angle into the side netting.
The
Valley were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty
when Stone latched onto a clever flick-on from
Kolodynski. Trying hard to stay on his feet after
clear contact from a chasing defender, Stone finally
hit the ground as he lined-up his shot. However
referee Grove was not convinced by his tumble,
and waved play on.
In
the closing minutes of the first period, another
Gordon header from a Williams corner almost sneaked
through a crowded six yard box, and shortly after
Kolodynski saw his close range effort blocked
in another goalmouth scramble.
Stone
opened the second half with a speculative long
range lob which sailed over the bar. This preceded
Wealdstone's best period of the game, but despite
some significant pressure in this fifteen minute
spell, they failed to have a single on-target
shot.
Having
ridden the mini-storm, the Valley then went in
search of a second. Williams's zippy delivery
into the box was only just too long for Kolodynski,
and Herbert's header - again from a Williams'
cross - skidded just wide.
The
jitters of the Butlin Road crowd were calmed on
61 minutes when after a short corner from the
left, Gordon flashed his shot across the box and
David Kolodynski
claimed a touch on the ball before it crossed
the line to make it 2-0.
Two
minutes later, it was Rugby who were on the right
side of another penalty decision, with Grove adjudging
that Afandiyev's challenge on Carbon near the
penalty spot was a legal one.
John-Henry
Hayden then missed the visitors' best chance of
the night, when he slid in to Hector Mackie's
near post cross, but was unable to poke it on
target.
Town
ended the game in the ascendancy. Stone headed
over from close range, Williams' low strike was
pushed round for a corner, from which man of the
match Gordon somehow failed to grab his second
and his side's third of the night, and Stone's
first time shot on the turn was saved well by
the busy Carroll.
