Billy Relieved With Opening Points

Valley boss Billy Jeffrey was relieved to see his side finally get off the mark with a win over a strong King's Lynn side at Butlin Road on Monday.

Billy was finally able to celebrate a win at the fourth attempt this season

Aaron Stringfellow's 89th minute winner from the penalty spot finally got Rugby off the mark for the season and Billy was very pleased to get the season up and running:

"It's a great boost to finally get some points on the board. It lifts the players, the spectators and everyone associated with the club. To be honest we didn't play that well, but we were definitely tighter across the midfield, and whilst they had a lot of ball and pressure, I didn't think they didn't troubled us to any great extent in the final third of the pitch."

The King's Lynn victory came after Town had suffered a third loss in three games at Hemel Hempstead two days previously, a result which had firmly established Rugby at the bottom of the table. The win against the Linnets has lifted Valley up into a slightly more respectable 18th place, and Town now face a further two games in quick succession with an away match against Gloucester this Saturday and the visit of Bedford next Tuesday.

Billy said : "Gloucester have had an okay start to the season, but it's probably strange for them having to play their home games at someone else's ground after theirs was devastated last month. Hopefully we can battle like we did against King's Lynn and take advantage of this."

Gloucester manager Tim Harris was a spectator at Monday's game at Butlin Road, and Jeffrey spoke to him after the match. Billy revealed : "Tim reckoned that King's Lynn didn't put us under enough pressure, so we will have to see what his side can do. If we maintain our shape and discipline, and play with more freedom in attack, we will be in with a chance though."

Monday's win saw a league debut for young goalkeeper Simon Lynn, who made a sound contribution in his first game and kept an all-important clean sheet.

Billy explained: "Simon has come in and done a good job. He has made a couple of good stops in the first half and been confident in dealing with the high balls into the box in the second. He is in possession of the shirt now, and I hope his fine form continues as the goalkeeping position has been a problem for us for a while."
