After
seeing his side hold out for two consecutive
wins against King's Lynn and Gloucester
City, Rugby manager Billy Jeffrey
believes his side is now mentally
better equipped this season.
An
own goal plus goals from Scott Musgrove
and David Staff saw Rugby take a 3-0
lead against Gloucester on Saturday
but after conceding two goals, the
Tigers pressed late on for an equaliser
but Rugby held out.
Billy
was very pleased with his side's performance
for the opening 75 minutes of the
match and also happy to see his defence
hold out.
He
said: "It's a great result and
keeps a little run going for us. The
performance was much better than the
King's Lynn victory, we got the chances
at the right time and took them well
- it's nice to see teams make mistakes
against us for change rather than
the other way round.
"The first was handed to us by
their defender, but our second was
an excellent one - with Scott Musgrove
cutting in from his wing and putting
in a great cross for Staffy - who
applied an equally impressive finish.
Akin did well to chase the keeper
for the third, and Scott took advantage
of his poor clearance to chip in from
distance."
Billy believes that his side should
have held out comfortably after establishing
the 3-0 lead but despite allowing
the hosts back into the game, Billy
was happy with the teams defending.
"Having done the hard work and
taken the three goal advantage, we
really need to learn how to win a
game properly. We should have killed
the game off, but we got carried away
a little and probably made too many
runs and gave them the space and opportunity
to get back into it.
"It was like the Alamo for the
last ten minutes or so. Simon (Lynn)
made three or four excellent saves,
and we rode our luck a little too.
Perhaps we would have gone under in
the same situation last season, but
the team is a year older and hopefully
more able to cope with the pressure."
