Rugby
Town will this weekend join the masses
of clubs throughout the nation hoping
to catch the imagination of the local
people with a run in the FA Cup sponsored
by E.On.
Every
season, all officials, fans and supporters
of clubs alike dream of a heroic run
of games in the FA Cup and now, with
the involvement of lucrative live
television coverage, the rewards are
higher than ever.
King's
Lynn were one of the lucky clubs last
season to get the attention of the
Sky TV cameras for their 2nd Round
game against Oldham Athletic at The
Walks.
Indeed
for a BGB Premier club like Rugby,
the First Round Proper is the promised
land but Valley fans have had to wait
a long time since the last occassion.
13th
November 1993 was Rugby's last First
Round appearance - a 3-0 home reversal
against Brentford in front of over
3,000 fans at Butlin Road.
That
meeting was now almost 14 years ago
and Rugby have not got close to matching
that achievement often enough.
Chelmsford
City have twice thwarted Rugby's progress
since 1993 with a 4th Qualifying Round
replay win in 1994 and also a 3rd
Qualifying Round victory at Butlin
Road last season - despite Valley
leading through a Jason Taylor penalty.
Rugby
have twice made it to the 2nd Round,
firstly in 1987 when Bristol Rovers
required a replay at Twerton Park
to overcome Valley and second in 1992
when Marlow prevented Rugby a 3rd
Round tie against Tottenham Hotspur
at White Hart Lane.
This
Saturday, Rugby will face NCEL Premier
side Glapwell, who currently top their
division with a 100% record.
Valley
have only been drawn against a team
two leagues lower than them once in
recent years which was last season
in the 1st Qualifying Round - a 4-1
win for Rugby at Butlin Road.
However,
Rugby have been disposed of by lower
league opposition on three occasions
in the last ten years - against Stourbridge
in 2000, Oadby Town in 2002 and Eastwood
Town 2003.
