Billy: We Battled Our Hearts Out

Rugby manager Billy Jeffrey was delighted with his side's efforts during the 1-0 win over Swindon Supermarine when they were forced to play with only 10 men for over an hour after Leigh Platnauer's first half dismissal.

David Stone was in inspired form in the second half and made the difference with the goal

Valley put in an extraordinary second half performance despite the one man disadvantage and Billy was very happy with the attitude of the players.

He said: "We battled our hearts out, and were deserved winners despite being a player short for much of the game. We had a totally different attitude from the midweek defeat in the county cup at Atherstone."

Things were made tricky for Rugby after a sound opening when on-loan defender Leigh Platnauer was given a straight red card after he reacted angrily to a challenge by Supermarine forward Ashley Edenborough just short of the half hour mark.

Billy continued: "We kept our heads after Leigh's sending-off, and at the interval we agreed that we could still cause them problems and catch them on the break. We went out there with our positive heads on in the second half, and we had four or five really good chances in addition to David Stone's goal."

22-year-old striker Stone was instumental in the second half and he got the all-important breakthrough when he turned David Kolodynski's cross into the net after 65 minutes.

"Stoney was the real difference between the two sides today. After the sending-off he had to drop a bit deeper, and created some good space for himself and caused them problems with his pace.

"They [Swindon] really only had one chance of note in the second half, and Simon (Lynn) pulled off an absolutely fantastic save low-down to keep out a free-kick."

Platnauer's red card represented a third dismissal in as many games after Kolodynski and Stephan Morley also received their marching orders against Tiverton and Atherstone respectively.

Billy said: "There is no excuse for retaliation and Leigh should know that. We spoke about it after the Tiverton game last Saturday and also in training in the week. Whilst I agree with the sending-off, I strongly believe that the player Leigh retaliated against should have gone too for the original challenge."
