two early and disappointing cup exits
so-far this season, Valley will be

An
FA Cup defeat at minnows Glapwell
and a Birmingham Senior Cup one at
another lower level side Atherstone
have represented two rare blots on
what has been a generally encouraging
start to the 2007-08 season, and Town
boss Billy Jeffrey is hoping that
this weekend's Trophy fixture against
their fellow BGB Premier side provides
an ideal opportunity for his side
to make amends for their cup woe.
He
said : "Everyone loves a decent
cup run. It creates interest in the
town, and gives us a chance to reach
out to new supporters. The FA Trophy
is the premier non-league football
cup competition, and I know from experience
at Stamford a few years ago, the lift
it can provide to a club if you can
do well in it."
Jeffrey's
Stamford side reached the latter stages
of the competition three seasons ago,
before losing out to a single, late
goal from Conference Premier side
Exeter City. Since joining the Valley
at the start of 2005-06 however, he
has suffered consecutive defeats at
the first hurdle.
Southern
League regional sides Hanwell and
Leighton have both inflicted 2-1 losses
on Town in those two years, in a competition
in which they have generally had a
poor record. Ironically their last
victory in the Trophy was over this
Saturday's opponents Clevedon in 2004,
when a Robbie Beard goal settled a
replay in Somerset - after a 2-2 draw
at Butlin Road.
Rugby
have already played the Seasiders
this season, having opened their league
campaign with a trip to the Hand Stadium,
where despite goals from Stephan Morley
and Matt Gearing, Valley went down
3-2 to record a third successive defeat
against the Somerset club.
Rugby's
squad for the weekend should be bolstered
by the return of striker David Kolodynski
- who has now served a three match
suspension. Delroy Gordon and Scott
Musgrove both made their comebacks
from injury in the 2-1 victory at
Cheshunt last weekend, and both are
expected to be available for selection
against Clevedon.
Midfielders
Tom Breward and Mark Edge both suffered
ankle knocks in the Cheshunt success,
although Jeffrey is confident that
both players will shake off these
niggles and be able to take their
place in the Trophy squad.
Clevedon
have warmed up for the game with a
2-1 victory at Merthyr on Monday evening,
a win which lifted them into the top
half of the BGBLP table - three points
and three places behind Rugby, who
are currently in sixth spot.
Valley
are however one of only three teams
who have played twelve league games
so-far this season, with most others
one or two short of this total. Rugby
return to league action a week Saturday
with a trip to Mangotsfield, followed
a week later by another scheduled
away fixture at Yate - although this
second game will be rearranged if
either side progresses to the next
round of this weekend's competition.
Saturday's
match kicks-off as normal at 3.00
pm. Admission is £7 for adults
and £4 for concessions.
