Rugby's 1-0 triumph over Mangotsfield
last weekend lifted the Butlin Road
club to 16th in the table, but they
are still perilously close to the
drop zone and manager Rod Brown has
identified the need for at least two
wins from the last six games.
With
Cheshunt and Cirencester seemingly
cut adrift at the bottom, the battle
to beat the drop involves probably
as many as eight teams for the last
two relegation places.
Banbury's
late win at Yate Town last Tuesday
has surely lifted the Puritans to
safety. They currently lie on 47 points
and of late have turned into draw
specialists.
Five
of the last ten have ended as a draw
with four of these coming at the Spencer
Stadium. The Puritans, in fact, have
not tasted victory at home since early
January when top scorer Nicky Gordon
netted in a 1-0 win over Cirencester.
Former
Rugby defender Kieran Sullivan is
in his first full season in charge
at Banbury and has already recorded
a draw against his old club.
A
managerless Rugby Town side held a
2-0 lead over 10-man Banbury into
the dying minutes after ex-Valley
player Ben Milner had deen dismissed
but somehow the Puritans found it
within themselves to get a draw deep
into stoppage time.
There
was also late drama in last season's
corresponding fixture at the Spencer
Stadium when Matt Gearing fired home
from long range to hand Rugby a 3-2
win after also coming from 2-0 down.
Rugby
have faced Banbury for Easter fixtures
in the past two seasons - each ending
in 2-1 defeats.
With
no game on Saturday, Rod will be able
to give his players plenty of time
to recover from the Mangotsfield game
and he will be hoping to see the return
to fitness for midfielders Scott
Musgrove and David
Staff.
Musgrove
has missed the last four games with
a leg injury picked up in the Hitchin
Town defeat but returned to training
this week. Staff also returned to
training and could be in contention.
He hobbled off during the Hemel game
two weeks ago with a hamstring strain
but will hope to have recovered.
Meanwhile,
striker Akin Aladetoun
has completed his loan spell with
BGB Midlands side Bedworth United
which saw a return of one goal from
six games and he could return to the
squad.
New
signings Rob Oddy
and Kieran Fitzharris
will be hoping to continue their good
form into their first away appearances
for Valley.
