Town boss Rod Brown has warned supporters
that it might take until the final
day of the season before safety is
finally confirmed for his side, after
they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against
Clevedon last Saturday.
Rod
commented: "It's so tight down
in the bottom half of the table, it
could go all the way to the wire.
Basically we need two victories from
our final four games, and I still
believe that we have got enough here
to achieve that."
After
the latest set of results, it is now
looking like the final two relegation
places will come from seven teams.
There are currently three teams -
Bedford, Bromsgrove and Corby - on
41 points, Mangotsfield on 42, and
Rugby one of three more on 43, with
Hitchin and Merthyr making up the
threatened group.
With
two defeats in four days 21st placed
Cirencester look virtually certain
to join Cheshunt for the chop, but
above them it will certainly be a
tense end to the campaign for the
not-so-magnificent seven.
Valley's
next fixture is - on paper - probably
their toughest of the four remaining,
when they make the long trip to the
New Forest for the match-up with high
flying Bashley.
5th
placed Bash's excellent 4-3 home victory
over Team Bath on Tuesday evening
further strengthened their claim for
a place in play-offs, and Brown is
expecting a difficult encounter.
"They
are a strong side, with a very good
home record - so it's going to be
a very tough ask. We had the same
proposition when we visited Chippenham
recently and we dug in for a deserved
draw - and perhaps could have come
away with more that afternoon. I will
be looking for more of the same this
weekend."
Rod
said : "No one will give us a
chance on Saturday, so all the pressure
is going to be on them. It's likely
that we won't get that many chances,
so it's even more important that we
take them when they come along."
Rod
has secured the services of Nuneaton
full-back Rob Oddy
until the end of the season, and confirmed
that he would be joined for the same
period by Kieran Fitzharris
- who has made a good impact in Valley's
midfield since coming to the club
from the Coventry City academy.
Rod
said : "Kieran has done well
since he joined up with us, though
I thought his head dropped a little
on Saturday after he missed a couple
of chances - which is why I took him
off. He is young and he will learn
and grow as a footballer, and I would
certainly like to be able to get both
him and Rob at the club for next season
too."
