Valley's
Club Captain topped the votes for
both the Players' and the Vice Presidents'
Player of the Year Award, and also
received the nomination from his boss
Rod Brown. 2007-08 was a particularly
testing season for Herbert, following
the sad loss of his father Pat at
the start of the campaign. Pat had
been a regular and well-liked visitor
to Butlin Road over the years, and
his illness and subsequent death meant
Craig missed most of the pre-season.
Despite
this, he put in another consistent
season at the heart of the Town defence,
and also took charge of the side on
a caretaker basis between Billy Jeffrey's
departure and Brown's arrival - remaining
unbeaten in his three games at the
helm.
Club
Director Mike Yeats thanked everybody
involved - the players, the management
& coaching staff, officials, volunteers
and supporters - for their efforts
towards maintaining the club's vital
status in the Premier Division of
the Southern League.
Manager Brown also acknowledged the
contribution of his backroom team,
as well as the abilities and effort
shown by his side - especially over
the last couple of months of the season,
where a run of only two defeats from
the final nine games ensured Valley
were safe from relegation.
In
fact this fine end to the campaign
ultimately lifted the club up into
15th place with 51 points - their
best performance since returning to
this level of the non-league pyramid
four seasons ago.
Looking
forward to the future, Brown said
: "We can confidently look ahead
to the future now. It was vitally
important that we stabilised things
this season after the change in manager,
but hopefully we can make some real
progression next time round."
He
continued : "I truly believe
that this club has real potential.
We have got probably the best facility
now in the BGBLP, and especially if
we can get the town and the local
business community behind us - we
can take this club forward."
"The
fans have been great ever since I
arrived here. They were particularly
important in the last but one game
at Brackley, and hopefully we can
harness that and build on it for next
season too."
"The
spirit in the dressing room is really
good now. Hopefully we can strengthen
the squad in one or two areas over
the close season, and take the momentum
we have built up in these last set
of games into the new campaign."
