The
2010-11 season saw our roving reporter

as part of the media team - joining
the Valley faithful on their trips
around the country.

After
relegation to the Central Division
of the Southern League, trips to Cornwall,
Devon and South Wales were no more,
but we did get to know the M40 very
well with regular trips to Buckinghamshire
and outer London.
Town
gained their first away win of the
season at the third attempt winning
comfortably 4-0 at AFC Hayes.
With
a drop in level, the Town fans had
to get used to grounds not up to the
standard of their home ground or of
clubs in the Premier Division.
This
was the case when we travelled to
Wednesfield in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying
Round. The West Midlands league club
outplayed Rugby to record a famous
5-1 victory.
However
from the mid September to the New
Year, Rugby were undefeated in the
league with decent wins over Soham
Town Rangers and Slough Town.
In
October, Town travelled to Stocksbridge
Park Steels north of Sheffield for
an FA Trophy game. Played on the fringe
of the Peak District, sometimes it
was hard to concentrate on the match
with the beautiful scenery in the
background. Having matched the Northern
Premier league side for long periods,
Town went down 3-2 in a pulsating
match.
In
early January, Town made the short
journey to local rivals Bedworth United.
Despite having most of the possession
they lost to a last minute goal.
With
many games having been postponed in
November and December due to the snow
and ice, Rugby were playing catch
up and they had five successive away
games in just under two weeks. With
wins over Ashford Town and North Greenford
United, the highlight was ending Hitchin
Town’s unbeaten run with an
excellent 2-1 win with Luke Keen scoring
a penalty to settle the game.
With
Daventry Town on a sixteen match winning
streak, Rugby were hoping to end this
and boost their own play-off chances.
After going down to three early goals,
Town fought back to get back into
game but still went down 3-2.
The
penultimate away game was at Bedfont
Town. With the ground just outside
Heathrow, every two minutes a plane
was descending to land to provide
a spectacular backdrop to the game.
After losing their last game away
to Leighton Town, Rugby already knew
they wouldn’t make the play
offs and on a very dry pitch lost
4-1.
With
only five away defeats this was a
much better campaign and bodes well
for the forthcoming season.
