Rugby Town FC’s annual presentation event was held in the club’s hospitality suite last Friday, and the big winner on the night was first team captain Steve Towers – who picked up three of the main awards on offer.
The midfielder scooped both the players’ and Valley boss Dale Belford’s picks for the season, whilst also taking away the shield for making the most appearances with an ever present in all competitions 51 game record.
The popular Kevin Thornton won two accolades, topping the supporters’ player of the year vote and also racking up the most man of the match nominations to secure the Media Star Man award.
The Vice Presidents recognised the contribution of defender Tom Ryan, with David Kolodynski winning the Top Goalscorer trophy, and other first team regulars Rob Parker and Callum Powell also received recognition for their efforts throughout the whole campaign.
The youth team gongs were also handed out, with Dom Bolton taking the Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player trophies, and keeper Ashley Bodycote the Managers’ award.
A shield was also presented to Eddie Machile in memory of Roy Miller, the youth team manager who died in a tragic accident last July, with his replacement and close friend Dan Gibson reflecting on what had subsequently been an emotional but rewarding season, hoping that Roy would have been proud of the efforts and achievements of the side he left behind.
The Brown family were named Supporters of the Year for their continued dedication, and there were the usual thanks for the contributions of the many key volunteers – including Jean & Digby Berry for running the car boot sales, Veronica Wilkins for her matchday hospitality and Tony Mann for organising away game travel.
Club Director Mike Yeats also thanked the club’s loyal band of fans for their support throughout what had been an eventful season on the pitch, and highlighted the contribution of manager Belford who ended his seven month spell as manager by lifting the team he inherited away from the NPL Division South relegation zone and into a ninth placed finish.
# Money was raised at the event for the Orchid Male Cancer Trust, with a cheque for £68 now being sent to the charity which is central to the soon-to-be released feature film Hanging In There – scenes of which were shot at the club’s Butlin Road ground earlier in the season .
