Valley U18's first game of the season ended with defeat against a strong and talented Alvechurch.

All four goals came in the first half at Lye Meadow in a tough opening Midland Floodlight Youth League Premier Division South game for new manager Josh Hearne-Wilkins and his new squad.
With England Under 21 manager Aidy Boothroyd in attendance, Rugby started brightly with early pressure and a clear game plan of looking to frustrate the home side.
Alvechurch had some long shots from distance but were largely speculative until the 28th minute when the hosts opened the scoring when one of the long range efforts beat Beck in the Rugby goal.
Not long after Alvechurch pounced on indecision in the Valley defence to slot in a second before Jake Whelan then went through on goal but was adjudged to be offside.
It was during Rugby's brightest part of the game that an Alvechurch counter attack saw them break into the penalty area and Valley defender Josh Camwell was adjudged to foul the Alvechurch attacker and was subsequently booked. The resulting penalty was dispatched.
Within two minutes Valley conceded another penalty this time whilst defending a corner the referee spotted an apparent hand-ball much to the visitor's surprise and the ensuing spotkick was duly dispatched to complete a miserable first half for Valley.
The second half continued with Alvechurch's talented forward line causing problems but Valley defence holding firm with Beck pulling off several spectacular saves when the defence was breached.
Valley struggled to create any meaningful chances but a couple of crosses caused Alvechurch issues.
Alvechurch on this performance are likely to challenge for the league title but Valley youth despite losing looked organised and on this showing will cause problems for teams at this level especially when all players are available after the holiday season. |
