The squad was heavily rotated with one eye on the future with three players making debuts and a total of six, 16 years olds being in the pitch.
Rugby started brightly and Jake Whelan scored an early long range strike catching the keeper off-guard but after this rugby never got into their stride and the game became scrappy with no real other efforts.
The second half was a cagey affair again with both sides lacking sufficient quality to break the other. With 10 mins left sphinx had some pressure and managed to score after a long ball was mis-judged in the rugby defence.
The game went to the lottery of penalties and Lewis Hudson in the rugby goal made two outstanding saves but rugby missed three to know them out of the tournament.
Overall pleasing that so many young players played and held their own.
