Rugby Earn FA Cup Tie at Basford United
Rugby Town will travel to Nottingham to face Basford United in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round.
Rugby overcame Grantham Town 1-0 in extra time after a replay at Butlin Road to earn a place in the Second Qualifying Round for the first time since Carl Adams' first season in charge in 2018.
That season Rugby beat higher-league Evesham United and Redditch United before losing at home to Hednesford Town.
Basford play two levels above Rugby in the non-league pyramid competing in the Southern League Premier Division Central after winning promotion to Step Three for the first time in 2018.
Valley have now been drawn away in all four rounds of the FA Cup so far although the Grantham tie was switched to Butlin Road due to an issue with the Gingerbreads' pitch with the replay also being played at home.
Rugby have won through to this stage of the FA Cup this season with wins over Westfields, Studley and Grantham this season.
Rugby v Basford
The sides have met four times previously when Rugby and Basford both played in the Northern Premier League Division One South in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons.
Although Valley recorded a win and a draw at Butlin Road against Basford in those seasons, trips to Nottingham were less fruitful with 0-3 and 0-4 reversals.
Rugby in the FA Cup
Valley have reached as far as the Third Qualifying Round once in recent history before existing to then-National League North side Worcester City in 2013.
Valley
last reached the FA Cup First Round
proper back in 1993-4 nearly 29 years
ago while Rugby's best FA Cup record
came in 1987-88 and 1992-93 when they
reached the Second Round Proper.
The Second Qualifying Round tie will be played at Basford's Greenwich Avenue stadium on Saturday 17 September 2022. Should the game be drawn there would be a replay at Butlin Road on Tuesday 20 September with potentially extra time and penalties to decide the tie. |
