Joshua Proud Despite Trophy Penalty Defeat
Rugby Town bowed out of the Isuzu FA Trophy on Friday night but manager Grant Joshua was proud with his side's efforts.
The defeat on penalties at Worcester City after a dramatic tie at the Sixways Stadium saw them fight back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 ended Rugby's run in the competition but in the horrendous weather conditions, Valley showed their resilience once again and Joshua was quick to praise both his players and the loyal travelling support:
"Firstly, I want to start by thanking our supporters, travelling down in a storm and some of the worst conditions I've seen at a football match and they yet again never fail to amaze me.
"Proper fans through thick and thin."
Joshua was also keen to highlight the spirit within his squad: "Secondly, I want to praise my team, yet again giving up two goals with individual errors but having that confidence and desire to come through that adversity and get back to 2-2.
"It doesn't surprise me anymore - it’s never ideal, but we know we can be 2-0 down and still achieve a positive result."
Reflecting on the contest, he continued: "I thought the game was played in moments and not a lot happened in all honesty – horrendous conditions for both sets of lads and credit to them as some good football was still able to be seen."
Joshua also singled out several stand-out performances on the night: "Caine Elliott for me was head and shoulders above anything on that pitch, he plays the game at his own pace, runs from deep, just played his third 90 in six days – I thought he bossed that battle and was the main catalyst for us getting back into the game.
"Geoffrey Lundoloki needs a mention as well, combative, dynamic and really stood out. I'm very pleased with his last two performances for such a young lad.
"Really positive signs from Max Martin on his debut too – he’ll only get stronger, his presence in there was imposing."
Looking ahead, Joshua challenged his team to carry their cup form into the league: "The result wasn't meant to be but anybody at that game knows we're a good side.
"It’s the million-dollar question whether we can replicate our performances in the Trophy into the league campaign. That’s the challenge, that’s the aim, and we really need to be moving upwards in our league table.
"We host Coleshill on Tuesday and I want that same energy from all involved that we saw this evening. It’ll be a battle and we need to get as many bodies back fit as possible." |
