Gary was appointed as the first team manager of Rugby Town in May 2015 following the departure of Dave Stringer.
The
then 34-year-old
ex-Football League midfielder was undertaking his first managerial role at Butlin Road after spending the previous season as Kevin Wilkin's assistant at Conference side Wrexham.
Unfortunately Mills only lasted until September in his first managerial post and resigned on the eve of an FA Cup tie with Ilkeston with Valley lying 20th in the table.
Mills had a long and successful playing career, featuring for a number of professional and semi-professional clubs – most notably as part of the Rushden & Diamonds squad promoted to the Football League from the Conference in 2001.
He also played for Crawley, Tamworth, Kettering, Stevenage, Mansfield, Forest Green, Bath, Nuneaton, Lincoln and Boston, before ending his playing career at Kings Lynn in 2014.
He joined up with Wilkin at the Racecourse Ground that summer and was part of a management team that took the Welsh side to the FA Trophy final at Wembley and also an FA Cup third round tie at Premier League Stoke City.
However Wilkin was relieved of his duties after they lost that final on penalties to North Ferriby, with Mills then also choosing to leave the club the day after.
