Rowe signed as a 22-year-old forward who had started his career with Ilkeston Town before moving to Histon in 2002.  Here, he made a huge impact as an 18-year-old forward scoring over 30 goals for Stutes.  However, a serious knee injury scuppered Rowe's progress who was being touted by many league clubs at the time.  Spells at Heybridge Swifts and Stamford failed to see James return to his true form of old before joining Grantham Town. Signed for Rugby in July 2005 and never hit any sort of form and after being fined by the club for dissent he was released by mutual consent only three games into his career.
