Match Reports

Rugby Town Eagles 2 – Leamington Hibs 0
16 May 2007

First match of another ‘Double Header’, played at home against opposition struggling at the foot of the table and fighting for survival.

Considering the opposition’s league position, Town should have had things all their own way, however looking jaded and slow off the mark Town made hard work of this match. Neither team created much in the first period, Joe Dominy working hard to control midfield with Dan McGahey running well off the ball. Up front Max Bosanko and Declan Collins had few opportunities but never stopped searching for that elusive half chance to open the scoring

Second period things slowly improved, Town made in-roads into the Leamington defence who were clearly struggling. Lee Gibson breaking down the left and knocking a square ball into the box where Andy Felton flipped a superb first time touch over the ‘keeper to give Town the lead. Towards the final whistle Andy Felton again found the net, collecting the ball from outside the box to drive a long range effort home. Town running out winners for a shaky 3 points.

Rugby Town Eagles 5 - Leamington Hibs 1
16 May 2007

Second match of this final ‘Double Header’, played out on a wet and slippery spring evening.

A game played at a much higher tempo, but when the opposition scored against the run of play, Town had to wake up. Looking much more like a football team, Town began working harder, finding space and creating movement off the ball. With Declan Collins being set-up from midfield to beat the ‘keeper Town went in at the break at 1-1

From the re start Town pressed hard, and with Kyle Taylers shot being parried, Rob Burton was on hand to hit home for Towns second. It was Kyle Tayler himself this time to slot past the ‘keepers right for a 3-1 lead. Town were now cruising and with Lee Gibson trying his luck from long range it was 4. Finally Richard Suddens pushing up from the back, with a late season flurry of goals, struck a sweet shot sailing in under the bar, giving Town the win and the points.

Coventry Sphinx 3-2 Rugby Town Eagles
10 May 2007

Town started the game well, controlling much of the field and looking the stronger.

Dan McGahey hitting the upright and Lee Gibson testing the Sphinx keeper on several occasions. At the back Richard Suddens and Alex Bosanko were solid. Despite having just a couple of goal scoring chances Sphinx went ahead but can count themselves fortunate to go in at the break a goal up, with Town paying the price of squandered opportunities

Second period Town had the ball in the net, with what looked like a good goal, however the man in black had his own opinion and ruled the goal out! With the home side going 2 up Town needed to find something extra, and due to strong solo running on the left Kyle Tayler pulled one back. Sphinx again found the net to stretch their lead, but with Andy Felton brought down inside the box and then converting from the spot Town eventually went down 3-2.

Chapelfield Colts Blue 3-4 Rugby Town Eagles
29 April 2007

Town struggled to settle into this game, with some scrappy play and tired legs from the previous days match.

It took 25 minutes to assert their dominance, a ball slotted thro’ from midfield found Dan McGahey to push past the ‘keeper. Chaps equalised soon after, but Town slowly gained the advantage with Ryan Evans and Nathan Clarke linking well. With Town attacking hard, the ball was headed off the opposition goal line, giving Richard Suddens the opportunity to drive the ball back into the net to give Town the half time lead.

Second period Town again found the net, Rob Burton running between the defence to slot past the ‘keeper. Town at last got into their stride and with Max Bosanko setting up Kyle Tayler to hit home for number 4, the game looked to be all over. Chaps fighting for survival rallied, and as Town eased off the home team found the net twice to setup a tense finish. However Town held on until the final whistle to run out 3-4 winners.

Rugby Town Eagles 10-1 Coventry Jaguar Youth
28 April 2007

Town started off badly, not waking up until the opposition had gone a goal ahead!

Thanks to ‘keeper Michael Fountain further damage was contained, pulling off several superb saves. It took a Lee Gibson goal to shake Town into life and when Lee Gibson claimed his second with a good shot slipping thro’ the ‘keepers hands, it was one way traffic. With Jaguar overwhelmed Town ran riot, Max Bosanko finding the net with a neat sidestep to push past the keepers right and give Town a 3-1 halftime lead.

Seconds into the restart Lee Gibson claimed his hat trick with a superb long range lob over the ‘keeper and with Max Bosanko crossing in from the flank it was Dan McGahey’s turn to punish Jaguar. Kyle Tayler’s strong running created all sorts of problems and paid off with a fine solo goal powering in from the right. Andy Felton added his name to the honours list with the keeper fumbling a well-driven volley. Congratulations to Richard Suddens, giving all every game at the back and this week firing in a very well taken penalty. Finally Kyle Tayler netting another two well-deserved goals to claim his hat trick and give Town a very decisive win.
