Rugby Town Boys 4-2 Mount Nod
20 May 2007

The last game of the season saw Town Boys at home to Mount Nod.

Nine months after the season started and having topped the table for much of that time, Town wanted to end on a high note and celebrate their promotion as champions.

Having secured promotion as champions two weeks ago Town Boys took on Mount Nod. Town boys were on the attack right from the first whistle and really took the game to Mount Nod. After several early chances Danny Roberts scored for Town. This was quickly followed by a well taken second goal scored by Sam Addison. Mount Nod had a couple chances of their own but Town keeper Ben Townsend was in fine form. With the half coming to an end Town went further ahead when Curtis Banton hit a fine shot over the Mount Nod keeper.

Town made three changes for the second half but Mount Nod got themselves back into the game with two quick goals after some poor defending by Town. Having looked comfortable in the first half Town were now looking decidedly nervous. As the half wore on Town regained their composure and extended their lead when Ryan Nutchey scored. Town finished the game 4-2 winners and celebrated their promotion as champions having scored 131 goals in 20 games.

In front of a sizeable crowd it was great to end the season with a win. I thought we wobbled a bit in the second half but regained our control of the game to secure the win. It was great to see Ryan Kelly playing up front and he came close to getting his first goal on a couple of occasions.

Well that’s it for another year! You can be proud of what you have achieved during the course of the season; I know that Alan and I certainly are. Next season we will be back in the B league and that will be a good challenge for us. The standard of football will be higher and certainly more challenging. Lots to look forward to but for now lets just celebrate being champions. Well done to everyone.

Alvis Juniors 5-2 Rugby Town Boys
29 April 2007

Town Boys suffered only their second defeat of the season when they travelled to Coventry to take on Alvis Juniors.

Alvis have a good set up and the playing surface is the best we have played on this year. A win for Town would have secured promotion into the B league and a win for Alvis would keep their promotion hopes alive.

Town Boys found themselves two goals down within 10 minutes of the game starting with Alvis scoring from corners. Town were at sixes and sevens for a while and were clearly shocked. As the half went on Town started to create chances by bringing their wide men into the game. Alvis scored a good third goal before Sam Addison pulled one back for Town. Alvis managed to score again before half time. H/T 4-1.

Alvis were clearly up for this fixture and Town were struggling to cope with their physicality. Nevertheless in the second half Town tried hard to haul themselves back into the game by playing attacking football and defending as a unit. Alvis extended their lead with a well taken goal. Town did not give up and pulled another goal back when Oliver Lamb shot from inside his own half and the ball bounced over the keeper and into the net. F/T 5-2.

I think that not playing for 3 weeks didn’t really help our cause today. Having said that we had talked about Alvis being up for this game but we didn’t really match them in terms of desire or effort, if I’m being honest. Our defending (as a team) for their first two goals was poor and having gone two behind we left ourselves with a mountain to climb. There were sort bring spells when we pushed the ball wide and got in behind their defence. On the day the best side won and we didn’t really do ourselves justice having beaten Alvis earlier in the season.

Two games still to go and promotion is not yet a certainty for us. It would be such a shame to miss out after all the hard work and effort you have put into this season. Our target now is to bounce back from this defeat when we play Pinley next Sunday. See you Friday at training.

RT Boys 7-2 London Road COlts
1 April 2007

Town Boys welcomed 4th place London Road Colts to Whitehall Recreation ground. Earlier in the season Town had won the away fixture 13-3 so hopes were high going into the game.

Town kicked off and set about trying to create some chances for their forwards. The London Road keeper was in fine form pulling off several good saves from Danny Roberts shots. London Road took the lead after a mistake in the Town defence. Town were fortunate to equalise when Jamie Fox hit a high looping ball towards goal, which the keeper helped into the net. This settled Town down a bit before they took the lead with a well worked goal scored by Ryan Nutchey. Just before the break Town went further in front when Jamie Fox scored. H/T 3-1.

Town upped the pace of their game in the second half and soon scored with a goal by Sam Addison. Town continued to pressurise and went further in front when Jamie Fox got his hat trick. Town went further ahead when Sam Addison lashed home his second goal. Town continued to press forwards and Jamie Fox was on hand to score his 4th goal of the game. London Road pulled a goal back after a long clearance by their keeper which the Town defence did not deal with. F/T 7-2.

After our lucky escape at Christ The King last week, I thought you played much better today. Their keeper pulled off some good saves during the first half which kept them going and frustrated us a little. To your credit you kept working hard and defended more as a unit today.

You have a tricky away fixture at Mount Nod on Thursday evening before a break until Sunday 15th April when we are at home to Pinley Colts FC. Do your best on Thursday evening as we need to win each of our remaining fixtures.

Well done for today’s performance.

Christ The King 4-5 RT Boys
25 March 2007

Town travelled over to Wheelwright Lane in Coventry for a return fixture against Christ The King Rovers. Town had won the first fixure 11-1 earlier in the season but Christ The King have been on a good run of late and scoring goals along the way.

Town Boys played down a slight slope in the first half and made good use of their wide men to deliver crosses into the box. Town took the lead from a corner when Ryan Nutchey rose superbly well to head home. Town had several further chances before Danny Roberts extended the lead. Further good attacking play by Town resulted in another goal for Danny Roberts. H/T 0 -3.

Town made three substitutions at half time as it looked like they were in control of the game. Christ the King had other ideas and pulled a goal back after a mix up in the Town defence. Christ the King kept the pressure on and within minutes had pulled another two goals back. To their credit, Town kept working hard and were reward when Sam Addison coolly slotted home. Moments later another Town attack resulted in an excellent finish by Conor Macleod. Christ the King pulled another goal back with a minute to go but Town closed out the game. F/T 4-5

As I said to you at the end of the game, I think we just about got out of jail today. After leading 3-0 at half time it looked like we were in control but obviously Christ The King had other ideas. I thought some of our defensive decisions in the second half were poor and we were generally too slow getting to second balls. I also have to question whether making the three substitutions at half time is the right thing to do for the team. I try to get everyone involved in each of our games but if I’m honest I think it very nearly cost us the match today. That said I thought you battled well when they pulled the three goals back. It was really great to see Sam Addison back on the score sheet today after going a few weeks without a goal.

We are at home next Sunday against London Road. We beat them quite convincingly over at their place but as we found out today that does not count for anything in this league. Have a good last week at school before the break and see you Friday night.
