There
was unbelievable drama at Butlin Road as Rugby
Town had looked to have thrown away three points
against Halesowen after the visitors netted a
late equaliser, but Jason Taylor popped up deep
into stoppage time to not only complete his hat-trick
but also claim the win for Valley.
Rugby
manager Billy Jeffrey named an unchanged from
the 3-1 win over Ilkeston with both captain Craig
Herbert & influential midfielder Willis Francis
passing late fitness tests.
The
263 fans were treated to flowing football early
on from Rugby, as they came out of the blocks
early and the Yeltz were struggling to cope with
Valley's pace and one-touch passing.
They
had numerous early chances and several corners
and it was no surprise to see the home side take
a 13th minute lead. A neat move down the left
culminating in Matt Gearing's deep cross being
headed home by Jason
Taylor.
Halesowen
claimed an equaliser ten minutes later as the
ball broke on the edge of the area to Alex Cowley
who drove home a sweetly struck shot from 25 yards
leaving Farhad Afandiyev with little chance.
Rugby
still looked confident and re-took the lead as
Danny Hall's swirling corner was turned into his
own net by Nicky Preston with Craig Herbert hot
on his heels.
The
visitors still had time to equalise once more
before half time - this time it was poor defending
with Valley failing to clear the ball on three
seperate occasions before the ball fell to Cowley
who poked the ball into the net via the post.
The
second half was, in general, a more subdued affair
with Halesowen turning to long ball tactics but
it was Rugby who took the lead for a third time
on 60 minutes as Gearing's corner was headed home
from close range by Jason
Taylor.
Rugby
looked as though were going to hold out despite
Taylor missing two gilt-edged opportunities to
kill off the game, the second from inside the
six yard box.
With
only minutes remaining of normal time, Halesowen
thought they had dealt the sucker punch with Shaun
Dowdall running through from the right and driving
a low shot into the net from 8 yards.
But
the impressive Taylor was to have the last laugh.
A lofted pass was met by the head of Aaron Stringfellow,
whose headed throughball found Jason
Taylor, who showed great speed
& strength to hold off his man before tucking
the ball into the net to send the home crowd into
raptures.
