Rugby Town's Jekyll & Hyde
form continued as they were held by a spirited
lower league Gornal Athletic in the FA Cup Preliminary
Round at Butlin Road meaning a replay on Tuesday.
The game saw few clear cut chances,
with the visitors definitely having the better
of the early exchanges.
Marvin Nisbett’s shot on
the turn went close - after good work on the right
by Calum Martin, and Martin’s long range
effort of his own was beaten away by Louis Connor.
Valley’s best two openings
of the first half fell to Tyrone Fagan, his first
drawing a one handed save from James Pemberton
and for the second he just failed to get a decent
connection after Seb Hamilton had powered through
the Gornal defence.
The hosts came into the game a
little more in the second half, but were still
too direct in their play.
Andy Gundelach’s effort
was turned round the post, and from the resulting
corner skipper Nik Preston really should have
hit the target with his header.
Fagan had a couple of further
chances, but failed to trouble Pemberton either
time, before the best opportunity of the whole
game fell to the visitors when Dave Meese squeezed
the ball across the goal from a tight angle and
Martin somehow managed to lift it up onto the
crossbar from close range – leaving the
Gornal bench to claim it had indeed crossed the
line on the bounce back down.
However the officials did not
agree, and the two teams set off to the Black
Country for a midweek re-run.
