Valley secured a sixth consecutive home league success despite surrendering a two-goal lead against lowly Aylesbury.
David Kolodynski’s double strike within the half an hour mark had given his side the perfect start, but injury-hit Town failed to kick-on from that and eventually ended up making hard work of the victory.
With Richard Blythe again unavailable for a midweek fixture, Steve Palmer made a first league start of the campaign in the centre of midfield – in the only change to the starting line-up from the weekend win at Chalfont.
Having had early chances from Seb Lake-Gaskin and Palmer, Rugby took the lead on 26 minutes when Josh O’Grady’s neat pass released Mitchell Piggon, and he steered the ball past the oncoming keeper James Weatherill – leaving Kolodynski to add the easiest of tap-ins into an empty net.
Niall Cooper preserved the lead with a fine low stop to Gareth Price’s well-struck effort, but it was soon two when Kolodynski executed a marvellous finish to Mason Rowley’s long through-ball – cleverly clipping it over his shoulder on the turn, with the Aylesbury defence appealing in vain for an offside decision.
Piggon should have put the game out of sight shortly after, but his close range strike cannoned off the post.
The visitors took advantage of this miss, when Price this time beat Cooper from a similar angle to his previous effort – after Aston Goss had broken free down the left wing and played in the striker.
The lively Price almost added a second ahead of the interval, with a twenty-yard lob which Cooper just managed to tip over.
Town started the second period capably enough despite the absence of Kolodynski through illness, with Lewis McBride and Palmer putting half chances wide, and then Lake-Gaskin and O’Grady both blazing better chances over the target.
Aylesbury made their hosts pay for these when Bradley Wadkins picked out Lamar Simpson in-behind the Valley defence, and he poked home past Cooper. McBride cut out a dangerous Adam Logie cross, before he then played a central role in the game’s decisive goal when he chased through onto Cooper’s long up-field punt – only to be clattered from behind just inside the box by Weatherill.
Lake-Gaskin stepped up to fire the resulting penalty into the left hand side of the goal with just twelve minutes remaining.
There was still time for Piggon to stab another effort at Weatherill, and for Rowley to head O’Grady’s corner straight at the keeper too, with Aylesbury’s Jamie Rudd lifting one over from the edge of the area at the other end.
