Rugby Town came from behind to record a comfortable sixth successive victory at Beaconsfield SYCOB.
Valley recovered well from falling behind to an early SYCOB strike at Holloways Park on a rare Monday evening fixture with four goals of their own to lift themselves up into third place in the table.
Recent signing Josh O’Grady made his full debut in place of Andrew Spencer in the only change from the weekend, and Town were soon on their game when Seb Lake-Gaskin’s shot from twenty yards clipped the heels of strike partner David Kolodynski on its way through to keeper James Reading.
However it was the home side that took the lead shortly after, with Wayne O’Sullivan finally finishing off a goalmouth scramble which had seen both Michael Lewis and Brian Haule denied at close quarters.
Valley responded well to this third minute set-back though, with both Kolodynski and Justin Marsden denied by last ditch interventions from Bradley Hewitt and Craig Carby respectively.
Alex Gudger blazed a good chance wildly over the bar and Lewis McBride’s effort was also blocked, after Kolodynski and Lake-Gaskin had combined well.
Rugby were back on level terms on 35 minutes when Justin Marsden found Kolodynski just inside the box, with the club’s all-time Southern League goalscorer then adding to his tally with a deflected shot which squeezed through Reading’s legs.
The open nature of the first half continued, with Beaconsfield’s James Hutchinson shooting straight at Niall Cooper from a dangerous position, and Sam Youngs’s deflected effort falling just the wrong side of the frame.
Kolodynski then played in O’Grady to allow the debutant to register a first goal of the club five minutes before the interval, although there was still time for Haule and Marsden to miss good chances for either side.
McBride was well off-target for Town shortly after the restart, before Lake-Gaskin scored the game’s crucial goal when he finished off Kolodynski’s low pull-back from the left.
This third goal knocked the stuffing out of the hosts, and Valley threatened to register another league hammering.
Lake-Gaskin put another good chance wide and then the same player only just failed to pick out his target Kolodynski with a cross, before Youngs found Kolodynski with a through ball - with the forward composing himself ahead of curling home from the edge of the area for his second of the game.
Youngs nearly squeezed one in from a tight angle and Kolodynski was denied another Rugby hat-trick when he forced Reading into a fine one-handed save in closing minutes.
