Valley were in rampant mood at Butlin Road, smashing eight past Calor League Division One Central bottom club Chertsey.

Once Alex Gudger had headed home to open the scoring in the thirteenth minute, there was no stopping Rugby registering the finest ever win of their Southern League history.

Having established a four goal lead by half-time, Dave Stringer’s side matched this tally again in the second period to leave Chertsey firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

To be fair to their Surrey opponents, they were far from the worse line-up that Valley have come up against in recent times, but it was an afternoon where most things fell the home side’s way in the box and they took advantage of this good fortune handsomely.

The only change to the Rugby starting eleven from the midweek victory at Kettering saw the inclusion of Lewis Bishop at full-back in place of the suspended Craig Kelly, and the hosts were soon on the offensive with Seb Lake-Gaskin nearly on the end of a Sam Youngs free-kick into the box.

From the corner that came as a result of this near miss, Youngs’s perfect delivery picked out the head of Gudger and he rose to meet it full-on and direct it into the roof of the net.

After the consistent spell of Rugby pressure that followed this opener, Justin Marsden made it two when he steered the ball past keeper Stuart Norman – with Youngs again the goal provider.

The third strike from Lake-Gaskin was probably the pick of the game, after he showed great acceleration and control to fashion out an opportunity for himself, before curling home from the edge of the area on 38 minutes.

David Kolodynski’s lob over Norman’s head rounded off the first half scoring, after he had run onto Lake-Gaskin’s through ball.

Chertsey had offered little at the other end in the opening period, although Niall Cooper did show good reflexes and agility to keep out a well-struck volley from Tom Betts in between Valley’s third and fourth goal.

Rugby were five up ten minutes after the restart, with another Youngs’ corner met by Gudger – although this time Norman saved the defender’s header only to see the rebound fall kindly to Mason Rowley, allowing him to smash in his first ever goal for the club.

The visitors pulled one back just after the hour mark, when Cooper spilled a relatively harmless looking free-kick and David Johnston capitalised to score.

Normal service was soon resumed though, when Chertsey’s Ricky Hogsden clipped Ellis Myles’s heels in the box, and Youngs stepped up to confidently slot home the subsequent penalty.

Kolodynski bagged another Town hat-trick when he twice pounced on Norman parries to shots from first Richard Blythe and then Youngs within a four minute spell – both times applying a simple finish from close range for Valley’s seventh and eighth.

Cooper then saved well from Andy White to preserve the record breaking margin, with both Michael Williams and Aaron Moses-Garvey going close to extending it further in the final exchanges.

Valley Line-up: Cooper; Bishop, Myles, Gudger, Rowley; Spencer, Marsden (Williams), Harris (Blythe), Youngs; Lake-Gaskin (Moses-Garvey); Kolodynski. Subs not used: Palmer. Booked: None.

Chertsey line-up: Norman, Green, Blake, Alderton, Morris, Johnston, Brown, Betts, Sharp, Pomroy, Jeffers. Subs: Wain, Hogsden, White, Brunt.
