Valley put on a scintillating display in their first home outing of the season at the expense of new boys Potters Bar Town.

Rugby followed up on their opening day victory at Aylesbury United by hitting Potters Bar for six in their first game at Butlin Road.

Following on from a number of comfortable successes last season, it was service-as-normal for Rugby at Butlin Road – with all six goals scored by different players in an action-packed affair that also saw them awarded three penalties.

Ironically the first outstanding chance of the game fell to the visitors, but James Gershfield could not take advantage when clean through after just two minutes.

From then on however, Town were just too quick and too clever for their Hertfordshire opponents, and were soon in front when Justin Marsden ran onto Seb Lake-Gaskin’s clever pass, before stroking the ball past Charlie Crowley.

Lewis McBride made it two on eleven minutes when he showed good skill on the edge of the box before superbly curling the ball into the net, and Sam Belcher added a third from the penalty spot – after Jimmy Martin had had three attempts at taking out Craig Kelly in the box.

David Kolodynski, Lake-Gaskin and Ellis Myles then all had good opportunities to extend a rampant Rugby’s lead ahead of the interval.

The hosts were even more dominant after the break, with Kolodynski somehow missing an unguarded target from a couple of yards out after debutant Lewis Bishop had broken free down the right.

Shortly after, Kolodynski’s surging run into the box saw him again upended by Martin, and he stepped up to take the spot-kick himself, and was successful at the second attempt after Crowley had saved the initial strike.

Another good chance for Kolodynski went begging, before Bishop grabbed the goal of the game when he curled one home from thirty yards for Rugby’s fifth on 67 minutes.

Substitute Steve Palmer went close to making it six, as did Kolodynski with an excellent overhead effort which struck the crossbar.

Crowley then did well to deny both Sheldon Dodd and Belcher with a fine double save, before the visitors grabbed a late consolation thanks to a neat volley from Jack Friend.

There was still time for a Valley sixth though, when Lake-Gaskin stroked home another penalty – after this time Myles had been fouled in the area.

Valley Line-up: Cooper; Bishop, Kelly, Rowley, Gudger; Myles, Mardsen (Maisiri), Belcher, McBride (Palmer); Lake-Gaskin; Kolodynski (Dodd). Subs not used: Booth. Booked: None.

Potters Bar line-up: Crowley, Martin, Doyle, Penny, Friend, Simms, Gershfield, O’Donoghue, Green, Hutchinson, Millard. Subs: Impleton, Laurent, Magwood, Bowditch, Robins.
