Valley proved too strong for a generally youthful Burton outfit in the regional association competition at Butlin Road.

Town gave starts to Ben George, Marcel Simpson and Kyle Bishop in three changes from the Worcester defeat at the weekend, whilst the visitors included their experienced club captain Lee Bell – with over 400 professional appearances under his belt – in their line-up.

It was an uneventful first half in which neither keeper was particularly tested, with the two sides separated at the interval by David Kolodynski’s 27th minute penalty – awarded after the same player had been bundled over in the box by Brad Goggins.

Kolodynski made no mistake from the spot sending Burton’s first choice stopper last season Dean Lyness the wrong way with his strike.

Albion’s brave resistance finally gave way in the second half though, with Sam Youngs and Jamie Towers both finding the net for Rugby within quick succession.

Youngs’ goal came after a raking long ball by Alex Gudger was laid off by a deft first touch by Kolodynski - allowing the central midfielder to curl the ball home, and Towers grabbed his second in two games, when he stooped to head in an outswinging Youngs’ corner.

Seb Lake-Gaskin, Towers and Kolodynski all had shots from distance, as Town took control of the game, although Burton did then reduce the deficit when Mark Shelton finished off a loose ball from the edge of the area.

However Kolodynski scored again with a penalty, after George’s pacey run into the box had been illegally halted – with Lyness again dispatched the wrong way from twelve yards.

The Brewers had the last word though with a late consolation, when young substitute Ben Fox fizzed one under Nick Bennion’s body from fully twenty five yards to register arguably the goal of the game.
