Valley put in a convincing display to brush aside fourth-placed Godalming at Butlin Road.
The hosts were rarely troubled by their Surrey opponents and they were given a 35th minute lead by David Kolodynski.
However nerves were left jangling, as Rugby failed to convert their subsequent dominance into goals – until two in five minutes towards the end of the second half wrapped things up.
Alex Gudger returned from suspension to skipper the side and Lewis McBride replaced the injured Seb Lake-Gaskin in two changes from the previous game – another home win and clean sheet against Potters Bar a week earlier.
With the kick-off delayed after the visitors suffered traffic problems en-route, there was also a low key start to the game, and apart from a dangerous McBride cross which fizzed just beyond Kolodynski’s head and a couple of other harmless Rugby long range efforts, there was little of note in the opening 25 minutes.
Will Grocott’s effort which deflected just wide of the post sparked Town though, and Alex Gudger headed the subsequent corner straight at Godalming keeper Richard Ossai – with McBride also testing him after a good pass from Ben George.
Kolodynski’s opener followed shortly after, when Grocott’s searching ball into the box found him with his back to goal – but the striker did well to turn his marker before adding a cool finish past Ossai from close range.
Grocott could easily have made it two with the next attacking play, but Ossai did well to block his shot, and then the busy keeper turned a Sam Youngs’ strike around the post.
At the other end, Ossai’s equivalent Richard Morris was a virtual spectator – with the G’s best chance seeing the assured Mason Rowley block Jack Mazzone’s shot just inside the penalty area.
Valley continued to control the game after the break, regularly threatening from wide positions – with George and Craig Kelly often adding to the threat on the overlap.
Mazzone did test Morris with his low shot from the angle, but the Rugby keeper was equal to this, and this rare Godalming foray saw the home side step up their efforts for a second even further.
Kolodynski carved himself a chance from nothing – only to curl his shot wide of the target, McBride headed Grocott’s deep cross against the bar and Kolodynski put another chance into the side netting after a neat interchange with Justin Marsden.
The goal finally came on 74 minutes though, when McBride released Youngs – who finished low past Ossai.
Youngs had another effort spilled onto the post, before Marsden made it three with a great strike into the roof of the net after Kelly had pulled the ball back to him.
Ossai denied Kolodynski’s power shot and Godalming’s Chris Musgrove nearly helped a whipped-in Kelly cross past his own keeper, before the biggest cheer of the night saw the late introduction from the bench of the returning Robbie Banks, making his first appearance for 20 months since suffering a broken leg at Royston Town in February 2013.
