Valley ended up on the wrong side of nine goal thriller at Owen Street, with the Leicestershire hosts snatching victory thanks to a 75th minute winner.
Dale Belford’s men had twice come from behind in this rollercoaster affair, including turning round a two goal deficit to lead at half-time.
However Alex Dean’s second of the night for Coalville finally settled the highly-charged affair to confirm his side kick-off the play-offs with a home game.
Coalville started the encounter on top and Courtney Belford was soon saving well to Nathan Watson’s effort, with Callum Woodward also putting one wide.
The opening goal came after eleven minutes when Belford air-kicked a Tom Ryan back-pass to allow the ball to trickle back over the line.
There was further defensive calamity later in the half when Chris Tullin’s attempted clearance was charged down by Alex Troke, who went on to lift the ball over Belford’s head – with Alex Dean the first to react to its rebound off the crossbar to head home into an empty net.
Rugby were back in the game within a minute though, when Mitch Piggon turned neatly on the edge of the box before firing into the bottom corner.
There was barely time to catch breath before Valley were level, when David Kolodynski laid the ball back to skipper Steve Towers who drilled home another low finish.
Belford palmed away another chance from Troke, ahead of Rugby’s third which came after the dangerous Kurtis Revan was fouled as he cut in from the right – allowing Towers to secure a personal double by striking his free-kick under Coalville keeper Sean Bowles from twenty yards out.
More goals looked on the cards for the second period, and both sides were soon creating chances to achieve this.
Piggon blazed one well wide after Kolodynski’s initial attempt had been parried by Bowles, and Watson struck the base of Belford’s post at the other end.
Bowles then executed an arguably match winning save by getting down excellently to keep out Rob Parker’s low volley, before Coalville squared things up on 59 minutes when Troke chased down a long ball to steer it home past Belford.
Watson struck the upright again shortly after, although it was only a temporary respite for Valley when the direct approach worked once more for the hosts with Josh Raven this time the man with a smart finish to make it 4-3.
It was soon level again when Revan once more cut in from a wide position before applying a powerful, swerving effort which Bowles could only help into the net sparking joyous scenes from the Rugby bench.
Bowles denied Callum Powell’s shot and Parker also dragged one wide, before the game’s clincher came when Dean was given too much time and room in the box before stabbing the ball home.
Unfortunately there was finally no way back for a now tiring Valley, although Parker and sub Jake Healy did both put chances wide.
Coalville nearly added to their tally in the closing minutes, when Ryan did well to deny Watson with a saving tackle at close quarters with Troke then smashing the post following up on the loose ball.
