Valley came out on top of an incident-packed encounter in East Yorkshire, as the hosts finished the game with just nine men.
Town made two changes from the previous weekend’s home victory over Newcastle by including new signings keeper Aaron Dillon and defender Chris Tullin in their starting line-up at the cold and windy Victoria Pleasure Grounds.
For the second game in a row, Rugby made the perfect start by scoring in the third minute, after they were awarded a penalty when home goalkeeper Thomas Beaurepaire clearly brought down David Kolodynski in the box.
Kevin Thornton stepped up to duly dispatch his spot kick in the bottom corner, with Beaurepaire lucky to have escaped any further punishment as Kolodynski appeared to be the last man and through on goal.
However, Goole equalised in the seventeenth minute when an accurate pass from James Kay found Nick Guest in space, and with Dillon rushing out of his area, Guest coolly slotted past the young Irish debutant.
The frantic pace of the game continued, and Valley were soon awarded a second penalty, with this time Jake Healy being felled in the area by Goole captain Sam Colbear.
Thornton once more did the damage, sending his strike from twelve yards the same way as the first to beat Beaurepaire. Town were now having their best spell of the game, with Kolodynski’s shot saved by the keeper on 25 minutes, and Healy also putting one over from Rob Parker's neat lay off.
This thrilling game got another twist just before half-time when keeper Beaurepaire was sent off for appearing to strike the back of Mason Rowley's neck after an effort on goal.
There was still time for the visitors to increase their lead ahead of the interval, when Healy found the net from close range, after Goole’s Derry Robson had initially blocked Kolodynski's shot on the line.
The second half started where the first had ended with a quick goal, but this time it was the home side that found the target to reduce the arrears, when Guest was again on the end of a decent delivery, before creating the space to fire past Dillon.
Valley substitute Marinio Peixoto restored his side’s two goal advantage with a well-worked goal just a couple of minutes after coming on.
It followed some good close interchange play in the penalty area between Thornton & Kolodynski, with the ball eventually played onto Callum Powell - who squared for the Peixoto to finish.
The home side though were not giving up and after Robson had blazed a shot over the bar, Christopher Jackson scored their third with a composed finish, with Guest this time providing the assist by sliding the ball neatly to across to him.
This set up a jittery final twenty minutes for the Rugby players and fans alike, although Goole’s chances of a late equaliser diminished a little after Alex Varley joined Beaureapire in the dressing room after a second bookable offence.
To their credit the home side did not give up despite their two man numerical disadvantage, but the increased space meant Town also had chances to finally kill off the game themselves - with Kolodynski going close on a couple of notable occasions.
