Town went down to an agonising defeat in Yorkshire after the home side snatched all the points with a dramatic late winner.
Shaw Lane substitute Marcus Edwards’ 95th minute strike robbed Valley of what would have been a deserved draw from an eventful game at Aquaforce’s temporary home at Frickley Athletic’s Westfield Lane Stadium.
Manager Dale Belford stuck with the same starting line-up from the midweek game at Gresley, but they found themselves behind in the 14th minute when Rhys Meynell scored from close range after an initial cross from Adam Priestley was flicked on to the midfielder by Lee Bennett.
However, Rugby were soon level through Kevin Thornton, with the in-form Rugby man bamboozling the opposing defence with his acceleration before driving a shot powerfully into the net from an original cut-back by David Kolodynski.
The hosts continued to press hard though, with both Bennett and Gavin Allott going close with decent efforts – the former heading just wide and the latter denied by the first of what turned out to be a string of impressive saves by Valley stopper Sam Andrew.
Rugby had a penalty claim turned down on the stroke of half time when Kolodynski appeared to have been brought down in the area, but the referee waved play on much to the disappointment of the upended striker.
Callum Powell put an early second half chance wide of the target, before Shaw Lane were twice denied by further cracking saves from Andrew, with Priestley and Jonathan Wafula this time the home players to be frustrated.
Despite this duo of denied chances, Town were arguably edging the new period and they got their reward for this when Kolodynski gave them the lead with an impressive glancing header to a pinpoint Tom James free-kick, which gave Shaw Lane keeper Tom Morgan no chance.
However, the high-flying Barnsley-based club were not about to give up easily and they equalised in the 77th minute when Bennett pounced for a low shot after good work at the by-line from Wafula.
Just as it looked like Rugby were going to hold onto a point in the face of the ever-increasing pressure from the home side, in the dying moments of the game Edwards received the ball midway into the attacking half, and he went on an unchallenged run before striking a decent effort which bounced over the unfortunate Andrew.
