Another Rugby Town fightback rescued a point at Butlin Road, although but for Aaron Moses-Garvey’s late penalty miss it could have been all three against ex-Valley boss Dave Stringer’s Chasetown side.
Another one-time Rugby man Mitch Piggon had given the visitors a half-time lead and this was soon doubled after the interval, but goals from Levi Rowley and David Kolodynski levelled proceedings before Chasetown keeper Curtis Pond denied Moses-Garvey from twelve yards as part of an action packed second half.
The late arrival of the penalty taker had earlier forced manager Gary Moran to make one change to his starting line-up, giving a debut in midfield to recent signing Ryan Quinn, but the Scholars dominated the opening exchanges.
Jack Langston put a couple of chances over the bar, with the hosts’ best opportunity coming when Levi Rowley just could not get his feet round Kolodynski’s cross to the near post.
Piggon struck on the half hour mark though when powering home Ryan Wynter’s centre, and the same player almost grabbed his second shortly after when another well-struck effort came back off the upright.
Wynter was again causing problems from a wide position two minutes into the new half and this time his delivery across the face provided a simple tap-in for Langston to make it two-nil.
Langston put one into the side netting and Wynter headed over, as the visitors threatened to run away with it.
However having weathered the storm, Town finally started to threaten and they got their reward on sixty minutes when Rowley turned on Moses-Garvey’s flick-on to Print’s lofted ball, before firing a deflected shot past Pond.
Kolodynski then twice went close to an equaliser – first almost forcing home a rebound off Pond and later he managed to skip past the Chasetown keeper before being denied by an excellent saving tackle.
In between the two Kolodynski chances, a twenty man melee in the Chasetown penalty area saw the referee dismiss Rugby’s Anthony Charles and Scholars’ James Dance after a long period of deliberation with his assistants.
Kolodynski did finally manage to grab the equaliser with three minutes of normal time remaining when he forced the ball past Pond from ten yards after Chasetown had failed to clear an Aiden Print cross.
Moses-Garvey’s opportunity to snatch the victory came after Matt Curley was adjudged to have taken him down in the box, but Pond read his spot-kick and was also up to block his rebound attempt.
There was still time for a late scare at the other end, when another ex-Rugby favourite Seb Lake-Gaskin showed good pace to set-up Pierce Kiembi, but somehow keeper Dan Jezeph managed to claw his effort back off the line.
