David Kolodynski scored a hat-trick as Rugby Town ended their run of three straight league defeats with victory in a goal-fest at the Shrewsbury Sports Village.
The struggling hosts stunned Valley by establishing an early two goal lead, before strike duo David Kolodynski and Ruben Wiggins-Thomas scored five times between them within 22 minutes of playing time at the end of the first and the beginning of the second periods to set-up the much-needed win.
Rugby’s starting line-up showed four changes to the one that took the field in their Vase exit earlier in the week, with Ashley Bodycote standing in between the sticks in place of the unavailable Niall Cooper, and Brad Harris, Ben Ashby and Chadd Birch also all in from the off.
However it was a disastrous start to the game for Town when the towering frame of Carl Rogers headed home with little more than a minute on the clock. Kolodynski could have levelled things up almost immediately though, when his header at the near post came back off the upright before bouncing agonisingly close to the home goal-line.
Haughmond were soon making the most of this close escape when Steve Hole curled one in from twenty five yards on ten minutes.
Matt Owen headed over and Bodycote was down well to keep out Hole’s shot as the home side threatened to put things even further out of Rugby’s reach, before the visitors finally got to grip with the game and launched the comeback with their first strike just beyond the half hour mark.
The goal came after Wiggins-Thomas had done well to get away from two men out wide before playing in Kolodynski to cut inside for a near post finish.
Wiggins-Thomas struck the equaliser shortly after, when he chested down Birch’s cross before beating keeper Sam Jones with a low volley.
Rugby then went into the break with a lead after Ashby chipped the ball over the Haughmond back-line to release Kolodynski – who rounded Jones to score and complete the remarkable first half turnaround.
The Valley blitz continued after the restart, with Kolodynski completing his hat-trick with a simple finish to Wiggins-Thomas’s ball across the box after James Dance had created the opening with a long searching pass.
The direct route worked again for Town’s fifth on 53 minutes, when Josh Ruff pounced on a mistake to play in Kolodynski who returned the favour by setting up Wiggins-Thomas for his second of the game.
Bodycote pulled off a decent stop with his legs to deny Sam Phillips, whilst at the other end Wiggins-Thomas missed out on his treble when his overhead kick flew over the bar.
Hole’s successfully converted spot-kick then gave the hosts some hope going into the final quarter of an hour, but - apart from another good Bodycote save low down to Hole’s strike – Rugby’s defence was relatively untroubled ahead of the final whistle.
