Town came through a tough encounter against lower league Ingles at the Dovecote Stadium to progress through to the First Round Proper of the FA Vase.
Quality football was at a premium on a poor playing surface last Saturday, but Rugby dug in to win the often frenetic tie thanks to a composed finish in each half from Romario Martin and Daniel Kavanagh.
Carl Adams's starting eleven showed three changes from the heroic victory a week previously in the FA Cup at Redditch, with recent signing Martin replacing the suspended Danico Johnson up-front, and Lee Thomas and Jamal Adams also on from the off.
The first chance of the game came the hosts' way, with Lloyd Tapper putting in a volley that was just off-target after Dominic Perkins had failed to get enough distance on his headed clearance of a corner.
Valley finally settled though, and Richard Blythe scuffed one wide after he had run from deep.
The visitors took the lead on 23 minutes, when Justin Marsden had done well in the middle of the pitch before releasing Martin with a neat through pass - with the striker running on to slip the ball under Ingles keeper Oliver Buchanan.
With Marsden the provider once more, Martin should have doubled the tally shortly after, but this time he chose to chip his shot - and sent it the wrong side of the upright.
Laithan Hammond then struck one comfortably over the bar for the home side, and he also put one straight into the hands of Town keeper Matt Hill, before Rugby's last opportunity of the generally disappointing opening period saw Adams fire one over after he had cut in from the wing.
The second half started with a good double chance for Town, when following some decent interchange play both Marsden and Charlie Evans were denied - by a defensive block and a good save by Buchanan respectively.
From the resulting corner, Evans then clipped the ball over at the near post.
There was little improvement to the game as a spectacle though, and with only a slender lead, there was always the risk that Ingles' direct approach could see them grab a leveller.
Martin squandered an opportunity to make things safe, when he somehow lifted the ball over the bar after Blythe's initial shot had been saved.
However with three minutes of normal time remaining, Valley put the outcome beyond doubt, with substitute Kavanagh whipping a side footed effort past Buchanan after Martin had set him up.
