Rugby Town secured their place in the Second Round of the FA Vase thanks to Jazz Luckie's late goal at Gresley.
The striker pounced in the 78th minute with the only goal of a close game, with the visitors then surviving a last minute scare as Gresley looked to take the tie into extra time.
With Ben Bradshaw and Dylan Parker unavailable cup-tied and Fazel Koriya out through illness, Lee Thomas, Lewis Hayden and Justin Marsden were back in the starting line-up.
Rugby failed to impress in the early stages, and increasing pressure from the hosts saw them then generate the game's first chance when a low angled shot from Ben Healey went just wide.
Town finally started to make some impression on the match, and Marsden fired one just over from twenty yards after Luckie had cut the ball back to him from the left hand side.
Liam Francis almost squeezed home a chipped free-kick from Ryan Seal later in the half, whilst the home side's best opportunity ahead of the interval saw Albert Lansdowne's rising effort deflected high of the target.
Valley's threat level increased a little after the restart, and they nearly opened the scoring not long into the new period when Seal was once more in the provider role, with Jamal Clarke rising well to his corner to send a powerful header onto the post.
Town keeper Matt Hill comfortably dealt with free-kicks from both Lansdowne and James Bennett-Tindall, before Seal had a shot blocked after good work out wide from Thomas.
Clarke had another chance in the box but was blocked out this time by home keeper Ben Allsop, but the deadlock was finally broken after a Town counter-attack saw two Gresley defenders fail to stop a scuffed low cross by Charlie Evans to allow Luckie to beat Allsop from six yards out.
Nehemia Zazi nearly grabbed an equaliser at the death though when his stab towards goal was just cleared off the line by Thomas.
