Rugby Town crashed out of the FA Vase at high-flying Midland Football League side Newark Flowserve.
Having been unlucky to find themselves two goals down at the interval, Carl Adams's men were then unable to raise their game sufficiently in a disappointing second half performance from Valley.
Loyiso Recci and Justin Marsden were back in the starting line-up for the tie played in blustery conditions, and the visitors made a sluggish start against a confident looking Flowserve outfit.
The hosts were rewarded for grabbing the early initiative when on twelve minutes Gregg Smith cushioned a header home after Tom Potts looping diagonal delivery had picked him out at the back post.
Rugby responded well to the setback though, with Marsden striking the base of the post after he had created the opportunity for himself with some neat trickery on the right hand side.
Town went close again, when Liam Francis headed a Ryan Seal onto the bar - with Newark's Jack Beckett well-placed to then clear the ball away from the goal-line.
However the home side soon struck again, with Danny Meadows this time the one to benefit from Valley's inability to deal with a ball into the box by firing past keeper Matt Hill from ten yards.
A number of chances came Rugby's way in the remainder of the opening period, with the hosts continuing to look a threat on the counter.
Flowserve keeper Joe Searson first did well to push a shot from Seal around the post after Marsden had played his team-mate in, and then Recci headed the resulting corner high of the frame.
Searson denied Charlie Evans when the striker was through on goal, with the Town striker opting for a delicate early finish rather than trying to round the stranded keeper.
Marsden dragged a further effort wide of the post just ahead of the half-time whistle.
With the wind now against them, Rugby made a poor start to the new proceedings though, and the game was put beyond them in the 68th minute when Meadows grabbed his second by forcing home in a crowded penalty area after Kyle Dixon's original corner was not cleared.
Searson was again in the right place to keep out sub Lewis Padmore's strike late on, but by then it would only have represented a consolatory moment for the visitors.
