Valley won a thoroughly entertaining encounter with Histon at Butlin Road thanks to hat-tricks each for Tom Fielding and Jordan Wilson.

The win moved Rugby four points clear at the top of the UCL Premier South table, although the visitors did notch three times themselves in the goalfest.

Recent signings Fielding and Wilson were paired up-front together for the first time, with Wilson making his first start in place of Madundo Semahimbo in the only change to the line-up in the previous weekend's victory at Wellingborough.

Fielding opened the scoring after just eight minutes when he ran onto a through pass from Barry Fitzharris to somehow squeeze the ball past Sam Roach with a shot that struck the inside of the near post before rolling across the full span of the keeper's goal line before finally crossing it.

Fielding then turned provider when setting up his strike partner Wilson, but the 24-year-old could only screw his effort wide from a good position.

The away side pulled themselves level not long after though, when Marcus Cole took advantage of hesitancy between Matt Hill and Loyiso Recci to nip in and then poke the ball sideways into the path of Dan Brown to help himself to an equaliser into an unguarded net.

Town did their best to restore the lead in the final half an hour of the first period, with Josh Thomas's stooping header to a Ryan Seal corner dribbling wide of the target and then another incisive run into the box by Fielding ending with a shot that was deflected just wide too.

Recci was blocked out at close quarters as he tried to turn on the ball and Dan Summerfield's inswinging cross was just out of the reach of Wilson in the closing minutes of the half.

The hosts restarted the game brightly as well, with a dangerous delivery from Caine Elliott cut-out by a Histon defender as Wilson was poised to pounce on it.

Rugby's second was soon on the board though, after Luke English had done well to keep an attack alive before finding Elliott on the left hand side, who delivered another searching cross that this time was perfectly met by the head of Wilson to power the ball home.

Town made it three in the 57th minute when Summerfield sped down the same flank before sending in a low cross for Fielding to net from, but Histon reduced the arrears to just a single goal again when another defensive mishap saw Luke Lindsay score with Hill palming in his strike from distance with Recci looking well placed behind the keeper to deal with the striker's speculative effort.

Recci was back in defensive action soon after, when a low strike from Lindsay led to a goalmouth scramble which the Valley skipper did well to head away for a corner - which sparked a series of corners for the visitors, as they threatened to grab what had seemed to be an unlikely third of their own.

Fortunately Carl Adams's side regained control for the remainder of the game, and they set about extending their lead again.

English blazed one way over the target after Liam Francis had headed the ball down to him, before Alex Lock did well to win the ball and play it on for Fielding to nip in behind the Histon back-line before unselfishly squaring the ball to present Wilson with his second of the game to make it 4-2.

Fielding secured his treble with a confident finish past Roach after a searching through ball by English, with Elliott then almost making it six when he curled one onto the bar from 25 yards.

The goal deluge continued into the final minute of normal time when Histon sub Andrew Henderson took advantage of lapse marking from the hosts to steer the ball home, with Wilson then matching Fielding's treble feat when he scored from the penalty spot after David Kolodynski had been fouled by Sol Goodby in added-time.

Valley Line-up: Hill; Thomas, Francis, Recci; English, Summerfield (Ahenkorah), Fitzharris (Semahimbo), Elliott, Seal (Lock); Wilson, Fielding (Kolodynski). Subs not used: Rosser. Booked: Seal.

Histon line-up: Roach, Collison, Tunnell, Crisp, York, Brookes, Brown, Towner, Lindsay, Camara, Cole. Subs: Goodby, Meats, Hemderson, Gough.
