Rugby had to settle for a point at the quirky GER stadium after their Cambridgeshire hosts snatched a late equaliser in added-time.
Madundo Semahimbo's 32nd minute strike had given Town a deserved lead, but their inability to capitalise on a number of other clear cut chances did for Carl Adams's side in the end.
Adams had named an unchanged starting eleven for the fourth successive game against a club that going into the game had made a decent start to their league campaign with five wins from seven games following their transfer into the UCL structure in the summer.
The first chance of the match fell to Valley, but Drew Kear failed to trouble March keeper Jonah Gill with his shot after cutting inside from the right.
Efraim Romanos's speculative lob from distance was comfortably taken by Matt Hill at the other end, before Kear unleashed another off-target effort.
The hosts did carry some limited level of threat on the quick counter, but generally Rugby controlled proceedings and Ryan Seal could have opened the scoring after a neat team move had ended with David Kolodynski playing him in, but he also missed the target from fifteen yards.
The breakthrough was not too far away though, and it came when Seal drilled a low free-kick up to Semahimbo, who did well to turn his marker before firing low past Gill.
Dan Summerfield's volley into the ground from another Kolodynski lay-off also came after a free-flowing attack by the visitors, with Kolodynski poking a further effort wide as Town looked to double their advantage.
A rare attacking highlight from March then saw Rob Conyard head a Craig Gillies cross straight at Hill in the closing moments of the half.
The home side came out fired up for the new period though, and Gillies almost made a telling contact to a Josh Burrows centre in its first minute.
Barry Fitzharris then twice rescued Rugby - first when he cut-out a dangerous-looking delivery into the box from Cavan King and then he was soon blocking a further good strike from United.
Fortunately Town soon regained their composure and aside from the occasional threatening moment from a long-throw or another set-play, it was Rugby that looked the more likely to add to the scoring tally.
Both Kolodynski and Semahimbo failed to get shots off after they had created themselves some space on the edge of the March penalty area, with Kolodynski also blazing one high and wide before the Valley strike duo were replaced just past the hour mark by Edwin Ahenkoirah and Thomas Fielding.
Caine Elliott was thwarted by an uneven bounce as he set himself to shoot following clever build-up play from the newly introduced substitutes, with Elliott putting another effort into side netting shortly after - with Ahenkorah again the provider.
Summerfield fizzed a ball across the face of Gill's goal but just out of reach of his team mates, before Hill was finally back in the action when he denied Adam Brumby's rebound attempt after the same player's initial free-kick had been blocked.
The game's pivotal moment came after Ahenkorah had done well to chase down a long upfield punt and set up Fielding for what looked like a simple finish, but the 22 year old's execution let him down and he sent the ball wide.
Having missed the opportunity of killing the game off, the sting in the tail for Valley then arrived in the 91st minute when Danny Emmington pumped a long ball into Gillies, who turned and somewhat fortuitously looped his effort beyond Hill and into the top corner.
